Aberdeen draws with Olympic to open girls soccer season

Down 3-1 in second half, Bobcats rally to tie game in season-opener

Aberdeen experienced some of the woes that come with being a young team in a 3-3 season-opening draw with Olympic on Saturday in Bremerton.

Aberdeen (0-0-1 overall) outshot the Trojans (0-0-1) by a 4-1 margin (24-6), but the Bobcats lineup featuring four freshman and three sophomores struggled to finish, including failing to convert on at least four 1-on-1 opportunities.

After a scoreless first half where the Cats missed on three of those 1-on-1 chances, Aberdeen broke through when Miley Anderson connected with senior midfielder Delaney Shoemaker, who set up Kennedy Kolodzie for a tap-in goal from 3-yards out early in the second half.

Olympic responded with three straight goals in the span of eight minutes before Aberdeen got back in the game when Arani Torres found senior midfielder Scotlyn Lecomte with a throw in. Lecomte did the rest, collecting the ball and launching a 25-foot shot over the keeper for a goal with approximately 11 minutes left in the match.

In the 73rd minute, Anderson took a feed from Kolodzie and scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 3-3.

Aberdeen continued to pressure the Trojans defense until the final whistle, but had to settle for the draw.

“I’m pleased with our effort and attitude after falling behind by a couple goals,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “We have a lot of work to do on our passing, finishing and marking up on defense.”

Fleming cited Joey Mayberry and Hana Lessard for their play on the backline for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen’s junior varsity team also earned a draw at 1-1. Val Aguilar score the goal for Aberdeen JV.

The Bobcats take on 3A class North Thurston at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.
