CHEHALIS — It helps to have your entire team qualify for the second day in order to take home a district golf title. Aberdeen’s girls did just that on Wednesday afternoon.
Moving six golfers into the second and final round, the Bobcats overwhelmed the field to win the District IV 2A girls golf tournament title. Three of them will pack their clubs and head to Spokane after placing in the top-20 spots at Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis.
“It really helped to have all six players participate on the second day, but the girls had an little extrinsic motivational factor going today,” AHS head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “They won a personal bet with me and I lost, but it was well worth it to see how excited they were to win. All six players got crucial points for the team win.”
Senior Mari Rabung finished fourth overall, shooting a 94 on Wednesday for a two-day 189 to qualify for state. Rabung’s teammate, Haley Farrer, finished eighth overall at 198 after hitting 101 in the final round. The third Bobcat to qualify for state was Kate Slyter, who doubled up her first-day score of 104 to finish at 208, good for a tie for 11th place.
All three will head east to Spokane on Tuesday and Wednesday for two rounds at Indian Canyon Golf Course in the state 2A tournament.
Three other Aberdeen golfers competed in the final round on Wednesday — Katie McGregor at 221, Emily May at 231 and MacKayla Waltee at 249.
