Lacking their customary first-place punch, Aberdeen’s girls used their depth to fill the largest stocking at Hoquiam’s Grizzly Stocking Stuffer Wrestling Tournament.
Winning only one title but placing 11 in the top five, the reigning district champion Bobcats amassed 188 1/2 points to easily outdistance second-place Centralia on Wednesday at Hoquiam Square Garden. The Tigers had 127 1/2 points, while Eatonville was third at 101 1/2 points.
Faith Cardenas, at 105 pounds, was Aberdeen’s lone individual champion. Elma’s Taylor Dick and North Beach’s Natasha Fruh were among the other titleholders.
Twenty-four teams competed in the event.
Aberdeen coach Craig Yakovich wasn’t exceptionally surprised at the way this championship was fashioned. He credited his younger wrestlers with supplying the necessary depth.
“I have five seniors, but only three were here today,” Yakovich said. “Depth throughout the team is a big thing for us. We have a lot of competition in the wrestling room.
“All in all, you come into a tournament and you wrestle as a team,” he added. “The points add up as you go. We got a lot of points today.”
Two-time district champion Cardenas needed only 33 seconds to finish off Puyallup’s Julia Richards in the 105-pound championship match.
North Beach’s Fruh was similarly dominant in the 235-pound final, pinning Eatonville’s Madison Jumper in 1:39.
Dick registered one of the most dramatic victories of the title round.
The Elma senior trailed Decatur’s Paige Dasher, 5-0, after two rounds of the 13o-pound final. She tied it, however, with a takedown and three-point near-fall in the opening minute of the third round.
On her back for the final minute of regulation, Dasher somehow avoided being pinned. But with the momentum clearly in her favor, Dick scored a takedown 22 seconds into overtime for the 7-5 victory.
Two other Aberdeen wrestlers lost to favored opponents in the title round.
Makenna Speed, Kalama’s two-time state placewinner, took down Aberdeen’s Cierra Skelly in the opening 10 seconds of the 135-pound final and eventually pinned Skelly in the second round.
Wilson of Tacoma’s Kathleen Flanagan, a two-time age-group All-American, overpowered Bobcat 155-pounder MacKayla Waltee en route to a first round pin.
Half of Hoquiam’s four-woman squad made the title round before encountering powerful foes.
Grizzly 120-pounder Mercedes Pinnell gave a good account of herself against Lincoln’s Jamayia Blackston, a state placewinner last February.
Pinnell scored a reversal and two-point near-fall in the closing seconds of the second round to narrow the deficit to 7-4. Blackston, however, took down Pinnell to open the third round and went on to an 11-5 decision win.
“That’s the best she’s wrestled in a while,” HHS coach Buck Giles said of Pinnell. “Great improvement against a formidable opponent.”
Trailing 2-0 at the time, Hoquiam senior Alexis Delahanty suffered a shoulder injury in the first round against Eatonville’s Taylor Curtis in the 110-pound title match. Following a timeout, Delahanty opted to continue but was pinned in the second round.
The most bizarre finish of the title round came at 190 pounds. Down 13-1 entering the final minute, Centralia’s Jakayla Shipe took down Decatur’s Adriana Siva and completed the pin with only six seconds remaining.
