PUYALLUP — Ashlyn Yakovich and Tatum Heikkila each claimed class championships to lead the Aberdeen girls wrestling team to a second-place finish at the Lady Jag Invitational at Emerald Ridge High School on Saturday.
Yakovich defeated teammate Rylie Waltee 10-0 in the finals of the 110-pound weight class to take the gold medal. Yakovich’s performance was inspirational for the Bobcats team according to head coach Craig Yakovich after the sophomore suffered a season-ending knee injury last season.
“Ashlyn had a solid performance today. She bounced back from a season ending knee injury last year and looked to have no setbacks, which is great for the team,” the elder Yakovich said.
Wrestling in the 190-pound class, Heikkila had an impressive run through the tournament bracket, defeating reigning state champion Ofa he lot Tuifua of Kent Meridian by pinfall at 2:43.
“Our wrestlers always set goals and one of Tatum’s was to avenge a state semifinals loss to Ofa from last year,” Yakovich said of Heikkila’s tournament run. “She was on a mission.”
Aberdeen finished with 138 points as a team, placing second behind Federal Way (151) and nine points better than third-place Bethel in the 26-team tournament.
Six Aberdeen wrestlers placed third in the varsity bracket, including Faith Lindgren (115 pounds), Alexie Darst (125), Logan Glanz and Madelynn Machowek (130), Hailey Wilson (135) and Ciera Skelly (140).
Yakovich was pleased with his team’s performance in the first meet of the season.
“I’m excited about how well our team came out and wrestled the opening weekend.” he said. “If this is how the rest of the season goes it could be pretty special.”
