VANCOUVER — Aberdeen had five athletes punch their tickets to state at the District IV 2A track championships at Columbia River High School in Vancouver on Friday.
Aberdeen’s Bryan Sidor was the only Bobcat to qualify on the boys side, while Faith Cardenas qualified in four events, including the 4×200 with Emmy Walsh, Madi Niemi and Kennedy Pruett. The top three finishers in each event qualified for the Class 2A State meet at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma May 25-May 27.
Sidor turned in personal best times in the 200 and 400 to win both events. The junior ran a 22.46 in the 200 and turned in a 49.73 in the 400.
“He was aggressive the entire race in the 400,” Aberdeen head coach April Meissner said. “We told him ‘if you are going to drop time, you have to be aggressive the entire time around from the time you go out of the blocks’ and he was today. He really finished strong.”
Cardenas turned in her own personal best time of 59.4 seconds to win the 400. She finished third in the 100 and 200, while also running a leg of the Bobcats third-place finish in the 4×200 relay. The relay dropped its time more than a second from their performance in Evergreen 2A Conference meet.
“I was just proud of how everyone competed today,” Meissner said. “Almost everybody that competed today had a PR, it was amazing. There was a lot of athleticism. After a cold and rainy season with these kids enduring everything they came out today and really competed hard.”
Meissner also cited Braden Castleberry-Taylor for his fourth-place finish in the javelin and Patricia Bates for her fourth-place finish in the discus.
