OLYMPIA — Aberdeen’s Aleeta Pratt went from one match just to get into the District IV 2A girls tennis tournament to one match from a state 2A tournament berth on Saturday, but couldn’t make the final leap at the end.
After knocking off Black Hills rival Hope Johnston, Pratt fell to Chehalis’ Sydney Cameron in straight sets in the winner-to-state, loser-out match at Steamboat Island Tennis Club.
Pratt will officially finish fourth after making Cameron work for more than 2 1/2 hours for her 6-4, 6-4 decision in the third-place match.
“Her match against Sydney was a slug fest; lots of long games and long rallies,” AHS head coach AShley Kohlmeier said. “To come into the tournament as a pigtail match winner and placed fourth overall is very impressive. She definitely turned some heads with her play. I have no doubt that her experience this weekend will make her hungry for state next year. I look forward to watching her grow and look forward to coaching her for her senior season.”
Against Johnston, Pratt made it 2-2 in the season series with a 6-4, 7-5 win in the morning consolation bracket match. Pratt came back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set for the win.
