After North Beach announced as winner, error give Raymond team title

Seagulls win second-straight girls team championship after error found in shot-put event

An error in the recording of a result in the girls shot put changed the outcome of the girls final team standings at the 2B District 4 Championships on Friday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.

After the North Beach girls 4×400 relay team of Katana Capoeman, Kaci Osborne-Hansen, Abigail Conn and Malia Cox crossed the finish line first with a time of 4:27.39, the Hyaks girls team was named as the district champion ahead of Raymond High School.

But approximately one hour later while double-checking the data, tournament officials discovered an error in the reporting of the shot put results for Raymond sophomore Karsyn Freeman.

Freeman was originally thought to have placed fifth in the event, but her second-best score was reported and not her 32-9.5 mark, her best throw of the day.

Once corrected, Freeman moved up from fifth to second place, moving Raymond ahead of the Hyaks for the team title.

“When the original results were totaled, it appeared that North Beach’s girls won the team title by winning the 4×400 relay. However, shortly after the meet was over, my throws coach, Ethan Gusdal, noticed that the results had Karsyn Freeman as fifth in the shot put when she actually took second,” said Mike Tully, Raymond head coach and one of the tournament officials. “When that change was made, it moved us 2.5 points ahead of North Beach. I didn’t expect our girls to challenge for the district title again, but they did a great job of competing and pulled it out.”

“It was a bittersweet thing. It was triumph followed by heartbreak,” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “For about an hour, we thought we were the district champions. … We did the whole celebration thing and then, about 30 minutes later, we get a call from the meet director (Mike Tully) and he said he was sorry but they found a mistake in the results. … I had to tell our kids and they were good sports about it. But it was the highest of highs to have to be relegated to second.”

Fry said he understood the mistake and does not plan to appeal the ruling.

“(Tully) is a gentleman,” he said. “After the fact, (Tully) showed me the result and looked back at the score sheet and said (Freeman) should have been credited with the 32-foot throw. … It was an honest mistake.”

Fry went on to say that while tasting victory of a district championship for what turned out to be a fleeting moment was difficult to stomach, he is proud of his team’s performance and the amount of athletes North Beach will be sending to state.

“We’re proud of the kids,” he said. “To be champions for about an hour was still fun. … We have a really great contingent (going to state) and we’re happy about that.”

Fry said his team handled the news well after hearing they placed second behind the Seagulls.

“They are a resilient group,” he said. “And they care more about each other than they do prizes. They are happy with what they did today and a trophy is not going to define their feeling or their success. … They are proud of what they were able to do, trophy or not.”

Several notable Twin Harbors athletes won district title and earned multiple qualifications to next week’s state championship.

In the boys competition, Raymond’s Morgan Anderson won district title in both the 100 hurdles (15.20, PR) and qualified for state in four events.

Teammate Austin Snodgrass also qualified in four events and won the district title in the discus (147-6, PR).

South Bend’s Judah Milton won the 300 hurdles title with a personal-best time of 41-58.

In the girls competition, Freeman won district titles in both the 100 hurdles (16.94 PR) and the discus (125-3 PR).

North Beach won two of the jumping events as Cox took first in the long jump (15-5.5) with teammate Osborne-Hansen winning the triple-jump district championship (32-5.5).
