Hoquiam 2, Forks 1

Hoquiam picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating Forks 2-1 in overtime on Saturday at the Sea Breeze Oval in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (1-2 overall) trailed 1-0 at halftime after Forks’ Eduardo Calmo-Calmo scored in the 24th minute of the game.

The Grizzlies tied the game when a loose ball was played back to Chance LaBounty just inside midfield. The Grizzlies defender belted a 40-yard shot that sailed in just under the crossbar, over the outstretched arms of the Spartans goal keeper for a goal in the 74th minute.

With time winding down in the second five-minute overtime period, Hoquiam freshman forward JB Fabian sent a free kick from just outside the Forks 18-yard box across the field toward sophomore defender Dylan Avila-Guzman, who ripped a one-timer into the back of the net for a golden goal with just 40 seconds left, giving the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead and setting off a raucous Hoquiam celebration.

“They were jumping up and down, chanting and cheering for Dylan,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “I’m relieved. I feel like the team needed a win. We’re a good team and are building chemistry. They needed a boost of confidence to prove how good they actually can be. Sometimes a win can do that.”

Hoquiam dominated possession for the majority of the game, which translated into goal pressure on the Spartans’ third of the field, particularly in the second half.

“In the second half, our goalie looked bored, which is a good problem to have,” Schmid said. “I think it was our game to lose really. I think the team needed the win. It’s a brand-new team and a brand-new coaching staff. … It brings everybody a little bit closer when something positive like a win happens.”

Hoquiam will have a big test when it faces defending-district champion Montesano at 6 p.m. on Monday in Hoquiam.

Hoquiam’s junior varsity team got three goals from Carlos Perez and a goal from Trevon Chavez in a 4-2 win on Saturday.
