After missing some opportunities in the early innings, Aberdeen mustered some late offense in the sixth inning to come away with a 6-4 softball win against Centralia on Tuesday at the Bishop Athletic Complex.
Perhaps shaking off some of the rust from spring break, both teams’ pitchers struggled out of the gate. Aberdeen’s defense got off to a particularly bad start as some infield errors helped Centralia take the lead in the second inning.
Bobcat pitcher Jaylyn McDaniel only gave up four hits but still found herself in high-stress innings, with five errors made behind her. All four of Centralia’s runs were unearned.
Aberdeen head coach Scott Wilson said McDaniel did well to limit the damage even when things didn’t go her way.
“She’s got a lot of pitches that she works with,” he said. “Once she found the umpire’s strike zone she settled down and did well for us. She especially did well for having a week off and not throwing for a week.”
McDaniel had to tightrope out of some jams but the offense came through with a rally in which Sierra Hammond came through with an RBI single in the sixth to push across the go-ahead run with a runner on third.
Bobcat catcher Reagan Glanz then added a sacrifice fly to give her battery mate a little breathing room headed into the seventh inning. Glanz drove in three runs for the Bobcats (2-2, 4-4)
Wilson said he was happy to see his team fight through some adversity after leaving some runners in scoring position in the third inning but is hoping to see his team get back into the swing of things as they get back to their normal schedule.
“We had some hits but we were lacking a little bit,” he said. “We had some opportunities to score some more runs but it was just good to get back out there and play again.”
The Bobcats visit Rochester on Thursday. Rochester finished second in the league last year and appears to be positioning itself for another run to the postseason this year.
