The Grizzlies (7-7, 2-3 1A Evergreen) dominated in multiple facets of the game, jumping out to a 15-14 lead in the first quarter and – after leading 35-31 at the half – put the game away with a 25-5 third quarter.

Hoquiam’s defense allowed just 13 points in the second half against the Cruisers (5-7, 0-4).

“We got out and got our running game going early,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “To me, the key all night was getting stops. When we did get stops, especially in that second half, we really ran well, which is what we’ve been trying to work on.”

Hoquiam was led by freshman point guard Lincoln Niemi, who scored a game-high 33 points on 11-off-22 shooting (50%), including six 3-pointers to go along with five assists.

Seniors Zander Jump (15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Chris Bryson (12 pts., 10 reb.) also scored in double digits for a Grizzlies team that shot 28 of 58 from the field (48%) and outrebounded Eatonville 49-31 (27-17 offensive rebounds).

“Those are great numbers,” Coach Niemi said. “It was really good to start to see us score again. We’ve been in the 40s a little bit more than we like. We got up a bunch of shots and got 79, so we’re pretty happy with that.”

With the win, Hoquiam sits in a tie for third place in the league standings with Montesano.

The Grizzlies play at Ilwaco in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Monday.

Eatonville 14 17 5 8 – 44

Hoquiam 25 10 25 19 – 79

Elma 52, Raymond 42

Elma’s balanced scoring helped the Eagles defeat Raymond 52-42 on Saturday in Elma.

The Eagles (11-6) had six players score six or more points to defeat the Seagulls (8-9) in the non-league matchup.

Down 21-20 at the half, Elma responded with an 18-8 third quarter to take the lead, led by senior shooting guard Cason Seaberg’s six points in the period.

“Our adjustments at half were spot on. We got great looks in the third quarter. We isolated guys in locations that lead to easy scores,” Eagles head coach Matt Ferrier said. “We brought some heat on defense after half and it definitely disrupted what they were trying to do.”

“Unfortunately, we didn’t handle Elma’s press very well in the third quarter,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “They were able to generate some turnovers and easy baskets.”

Seaberg led Elma with 10 points with point guard Traden Carter scoring nine for the Eagles, which shot 38% from the field on 23-of-68 shooting.

“We didn’t shoot well whatsoever,” Ferrier said. “Raymond played incredibly well. They shot well. They are well coached and their defensive game plan was spot on. The triangle-and-2 zone caused us to stumble in the first half.”

Raymond was led by junior guard Chris Quintana with 10 points and hit 17-of-49 shots from the field (35%) as a squad.

“I’m proud of the way our guys battled in a tough environment tonight. We knew that Elma would be similar to some of the teams that we might see in the playoffs, so that was our mindset going in,” Tully said. “Our goal was to really grind things out and make it difficult for Seaberg and Carter to score and we were able to do that for most of the game.”

Raymond plays at North Beach at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Elma hosts Montesano in a key 1A Evergreen League matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Eagles will honor their 1964 state-championship team as part of Friday’s festivities.

Ilwaco 76, Ocosta 38

Ocosta played from behind throughout the night in a 76-38 loss to league-leading Ilwaco on Saturday in Ilwaco.

The Wildcats (4-11, 3-8 2B Pacific) trailed by 10 after the first quarter and 31-17 by halftime as Ilwaco’s Kyle Morris scored 20 of his game-high 31 points in the first half.

“Well, tonight we got a taste of big boy basketball,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “Ilwaco was quite a bit quicker on the court and moved the ball extremely well. We did do some things alright tonight at times, with Michael Priest (12 points, 5 rebounds) having his best offensive game of the season.”

Tarren Lewis added 10 points and four assists for the Wildcats.
