Tenino 61, Elma 45

Elma couldn’t overcome a first-half, long-range onslaught in a 61-45 loss to Tenino on Thursday at Tenino High School.

The Eagles (10-6, 3-4 1A Evergreen) got behind 32-16 at halftime after the Beavers (7-11, 5-1) shot lights out from beyond the arc, hitting 8 of 13 (62%) from the 3-point line over the first 16 minutes of the game.

Elma rallied with a 17-point performance in the third quarter, but playing without senior guard Traden Carter, who was out due to illness, the Eagles fell short in suffering their third league loss of the season.

“The barrage of three pointers in the first half killed us. … Just put us behind at half. That’s a team that is playing incredibly well,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “We showed a ton of grit and heart after the intermission. Our half time offensive adjustments were spot on and our kids battled.”

Elma was led by junior forward Isaac McGaffey, who scored 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals.

The Eagles shot 38% from the field on 18-of-47 shooting, including 2 of 12 (17%) from 3-point range.

”I have heartbroken kids tonight. They truly thought they were winning that game. They came focused and motivated and kids stepped up when their leader was gone,” Ferrier said. “Got the game back to a 10 point-deficit, just couldn’t get it back to single digits. Tenino had to fight the whole way for it.”

Elma sits in third place in the 1A Evergreen League and will host Rainier at 7 p.m. on Monday.

A big game from Caden Grubb bolstered Montesano in a 58-50 win over Hoquiam on Thursday at Hoquiam High School.

The Bulldogs (10-8, 5-1 1A Evergreen) led 24-22 over the Grizzlies (5-12, 1-4) at the half before outscoring Hoquiam by 10 points in the third quarter, thanks in large part to Grubb, who scored eight of his game-high 28 points in the frame.

Grubb also had 13 rebounds to record a double-double in the game.

“All the credit in the world to Monte. Every time we needed a stop, they’d make a big shot,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “Caden Grubb was a monster that we had no answer for all night. A great kid making great plays all night long. My kids played very hard and battled back after a great third quarter from Monte. Just didn’t have enough to finish it and Monte finished very strong.”

The Ravens (7-10, 3-2 2B Pacific) faced an uphill climb against the Spartans (16-2, 6-0) as RSB starter Chris Banker was unavailable for the game.

Quintana and his Ravens teammates “stepped up to fill (Banker’s) absence,” according to RSB head coach Jon Schray.

Quintana scored a game-high 31 points – 11 in a fourth-quarter comeback attempt – to pace the Ravens.

Tanner Morris had 12 rebounds to lead the Ravens while Carson Ridderbush (7 points) and Isaac Schlueter (3 pts.) were cited by Schray for “stepping up defensively and pushed themselves to play more minutes.”

“We played with a lot of heart, battling the whole game,” Schray said. “And the crowd was great.”

Seattle Christian 70, Elma 47

Elma lost a non-league game to Seattle Christian 70-47 on Saturday at Seattle Christian High School.

Elma (10-7) led 11-10 after one quarter but saw the game get away as the Warriors (9-7) got hots in the second frame, going 7 of 9 from 3-point range to outscore the Eagles by 20 points to take a comfortable 37-18 halftime lead.

“The game plan going into tonight was to make them beat us from 19 feet,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “They only did that in one quarter, but it was a big one.”

Elma got senior guard Traden Carter back in the lineup after missing a game, but the Eagles roster is still dealing with the flu bug as Tanner Moe, Luke Schneider and Dylan Myer were all out due to illness.

Standout junior forward Isaac McGaffey scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists and had four steals to lead Elma.

Senior point guard Theo Flores added nine points and four assists for an Eagles squad that shot 39% on 20-of-51 shooting, including 3 of 16 from beyond the arc (19%).

“The game was much more competitive than the score indicates. Another one of those games that a team hits for a career second quarter,” Ferrier said. “We specifically put games like this on our schedule late to test us. They were a good team. We never quit and kept pushing to get back into the game. The guys that were on the bus fought the whole way.”

Elma 11 7 12 17 – 47

Seattle Christian 10 27 16 17 – 70

Scoring: Elma – McGaffey 20, Flores 9, Olson 6, Webb 5, Carter 4, Phan 3.
