BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Willapa Valley 72, North Beach 38
Willapa Valley capped off a successful trip to Ocean Shores with a 72-38 victory over North Beach in the championship game of the North Beach Holiday with the Hyaks Tournament on Friday.
Valley (7-2 overall) jumped out to a 25-9 lead after the first eight minutes of the game and never looked back, leading 46-20 by halftime and 64-31 by the end of the third quarter.
“Once again, we did a great job setting the tone on the defensive end,” Willapa Valley head coach Derek Rask said. “We didn’t allow North Beach to get easy shots and we rebounded the ball well, which allowed us to get into our transition game on offense.”
Valley was led by senior guard Nathan Fluke and tournament MVP Blane King with 17 points apiece.
Fluke added seven assists to his stat line while Vikings senior Connor “Cheese” Keeton had 11 rebounds to lead Valley.
Willapa Valley shot 37.8% on 28-of-74 shooting while the Hyaks (4-6) were 16 of 45 from the field (35.5%).
J.J. Eastman led North Beach with 17 points.
“We gave them way to many second, third and sometimes even fourth-chance shots,” Hyaks head coach Jordan Fry said. “Credit Valley though, they are tough and they do all the little things right and in sports, the little things add up to big things in the end. I was proud of how hard our kids fought and hustled, but we need to get a little bit tougher.”

North Beach 9 11 11 7 – 38

Forks 64, Hoquiam 48

The Grizzlies (3-6) trailed by seven after one quarter despite nine points by Hoquiam sophomore point guard Lincoln Niemi.
Leading 41-32 entering the third quarter, the Spartans (9-1) pulled away by scoring 23 points in the final period, 11 by forward Ty Rowley.

Hoquiam was outrebounded 49-27 in the game and allowed 19 offensive rebounds, which Forks turned into 12 second-chance points, 10 in the first half.
“While there was still a lot to work on, what I told the kids and my coaches was even though we got outrebounded by 22, there was a reality tonight where we could have won that game,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “That’s encouraging because the first time we played them, there was no reality where we were going to win the game.”
Niemi added 16 points for a Grizzlies team that went 17 of 55 from the field (30.9%), 9 of 16 from the free-throw line (56.3%) and had 13 turnovers as a team to 14 for Forks.
“We’re just not making shots right now,” said Coach Niemi, who commended the energy and defense of freshman forward Talan Abbott off the bench. “But we did get to the foul line 16 times, which is more than we’ve got all year. There is some encouraging stuff happening.”

Scoring: Forks – Lausche 29, Rowley 18, Foster 5, Lohrengel 2, Hernandez 2, Ramos 2, Terrones 2, Olsen 2, Cobody 2. Hoquiam – Bozich 22, Niemi 16, Byron 4, Maxfield 2, Azevedo 2, Dayton 1, Abbott 1.
