Mountain View 5, Aberdeen 3

Aberdeen saw a 3-0 second-half lead evaporate in a 5-3 loss to 3A-class Mountain View on Friday at Mountain View High School.

The Bobcats (2-1 overall) got on the board early when a Cristian Lopez throw-in to the head of senior striker Marc Avila was flicked back to senior forward Elmer Torres.

Torres then sent a short cross to senior midfielder Leo Garcia, who scored on a low shot in his first game back from injury to put the Bobcats up 1-0 in the 12th minute of the game.

After dodging a couple of point-blank Thunder shots that went over the crossbar, Aberdeen doubled its lead when Lopez dropped a ball back to junior defender Ryker Scott, who sent a long ball to Torres, who got past his defender then dribbled past the keeper for a textbook finish with just seconds remaining in the first half.

The Bobcats got the all-important three-goal lead five minutes into the second half when a throw-in from senior defender Trino Villar found the foot of Lopez, who ran down the left sideline and sent a well0placed ball to Avila, who one-touched a shot into the net for a 3-0 lead.

But Mountain View’s comeback began with a goal just one minute later and an Aberdeen own goal a few minutes after that made it a 3-2 game.

The Thunder would tie the game Bobcats junior goalkeeper Grady Osina stopped a 1-on-1 attempt but the rebound was put in the net, giving Mountain View its third goal in an approximate 10-minute time span.

Using an effective passing game and defensive play, the Thunder would hold the Bobcats scoreless the rest of the way while scoring twice more to earn the win.

“This was a very good test for us against a quality opponent,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “It was made very apparent that we need to improve in many areas and I hope this was an eye opener for the boys.”

Aberdeen’s JV team lost 5-0 on Friday, with the Bobcats’ Brennan Cone commended for his play by Bobcats assistant coach Luis Soto.

Aberdeen 5, Rochester 0

Playing its second game in as many days, Aberdeen earned a 5-0 shutout victory over Rochester on Saturday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (3-1) got on the board when junior Cristian Lopez headed in a hard shot of a corner kick from senior midfielder Leo Garcia in the 22nd minute.

Six minutes later, Bobcats senior defender Javier Lagunas sent a throw-in over the Warriors defense to defender Marc Avila, who dribbled to the end line and passed to senior forward Elmer Torres, who scored from 6-yards out for a 2-0 lead, one which Aberdeen took into halftime.

The Cats continued to create consistent scoring chances for three goals in the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Gilbran Garcia sent a cross into the 18-yard box that was deflected before ending up on the foot of Torres, who dropped it back to senior midfielder Leo Garcia for a hard, low shot that found the back of the net in the 50th minute.

A Rochester own goal followed by a goal from junior forward Edgar Ceja off a rebound from a Lopez shot to close out the scoring in the 62nd minute.

“We were more organized in our defensive shape and communicated early on both defense and offense,” who cited the play of Leo Garcia, Lagunas, Lopez and senior defender Angel Espinoza. “Along with a better first touch and passing more accurately to our targets resulted in a huge amount of time with the ball and many scoring chances.”

Bobcats goalkeeper Grady Osina recorded his second shutout of the season with the victory.
