The race for prep boys soccer supremacy in the 1A Evergreen League got a little tighter after some big upsets on Wednesday.
Hoquiam 4, Forks 0
Hoquiam got bit games from Santiago Martinez Ortiz and JB Fabian en route to a 4-0 win Wednesday at Forks.
The Grizzlies (4-7 overall, 4-5 1A Evergreen) took control of the game on a penalty-kick goal by Martinez Ortiz, who then assisted on a goal by freshman midfielder Alexsander Perez for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Fabian, a freshman forward, made it a 3-0 game in the second half with a goal off a Martinez Ortiz through ball and capped off the scoring later in the half with a hard shot over the Spartans keeper.
Hoquiam goal keeper Mauricio Avila-Guzman returned to the pitch after a few games off and made six saves – including a penalty-kick stop – to earn the clean sheet.
“Just adding one of our starters (Avila-Guzman) back into the game I think really picked up the momentum of the team,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “That’s what helped us today.”
With the win, Hoquiam sits 1.5 games behind Elma for fourth place in the 1A Evergreen League standings.
Hoquiam takes on Montesano at 7 p.m. Friday at Montesano High School.
Hoquiam 2 2 – 4
Forks 0 0 – 0
Scoring
First half – 1, Hoquiam, Martinez Ortiz. 2, Hoquiam, A. Perez (Martinez Ortiz).
Second half – 3, Hoquiam, JB Fabian (Martinez Ortiz). 4, Hoquiam, JB Fabian.
Eatonville 3, Montesano 2
Montesano’s long league winning streak was snapped with a 3-2 overtime loss to Eatonville on Wednesday in Eatonville.
The Bulldogs (7-3, 7-1 1A Evergreen) fell behind quickly on a penalty-kick goal in the third minute and trailed 2-0 by halftime against the physically-minded Cruisers (6-4, 6-2).
After a Bulldogs tackle in the box led to a penalty-kick goal and Monte allowed a goal on a set piece, Bulldogs head coach Fidel Sanchez tried to wake his team up at halftime.
“Mistakes on our end, uncharacteristic mistakes that we haven’t seen in awhile,” he said of the first half. “We challenged the players: Do you have the character to bounce back or are you going to put your heads down and say that was it? It’s not our night.”
The coaching staff’s message was received loud and clear as Monte junior forward Felix Romero scored in the 50th minute and the Bulldogs tied the game on sophomore midfielder Cris Tobar’s goal in the 62nd minute.
But despite getting the better scoring chances in the second half, the Bulldogs couldn’t find the go-ahead goal and the game went into overtime.
Eatonville freshman midfielder Nathan Christenson scored on a hard shot for a golden goal in the second overtime, ending the game and snapping the Bulldogs’ 18-game league win streak.
“I give (Monte’s players) credit because they came back and tied it and we were on (Eatonville) the whole second half,” Sanchez said. “We just could not get that third goal and we were very close a couple of times.”
With the loss, Montesano is one game up on both Eatonville and Raymond-South Bend in the league standings and currently holds a goal-differential tiebreaker against both teams.
“We have the tie breaker on Eatonville, so we’re still good there,” Sanchez said. “So we’re fine. We’ve just got to play and we’ve got to win.”
Montesano’s JV team won 4-1 on Wednesday. Freshman forward Peter Bruland scored three goals for the Bulldogs.

Raymond-South Bend 4, Elma 2
Raymond-South Bend leapfrogged Elma in the league standings with a 4-2 victory on Wednesday at South Bend High School.
The Ravens (6-2, 6-2 1A Evergreen) scored three first-half goals – including a penalty-kick conversion 20 minutes into the game – to take a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime, putting Elma (6-5, 5-3) into a precarious position.
“(RSB) played really hard and did a nice job of creating opportunities in the way they want to score,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said.
The Eagles responded with a goal by senior forward Cason Seaberg off a Jose Perez assist in the 54th minute.
Seaberg returned the favor, sending a through pass that Perez jumped on for a goal in the 70th minute.
With Elma pressing numbers forward in hopes of tying the game in the final 10 minutes, RSB played a long ball into the Elma defensive end that was poked into the net for the clinching insurance goal, handing Elma a rare second-consecutive league loss.
The win puts the Ravens alone in second place in the league standings based on a 4-2 win over Eatonville on March 27.
RSB hosts Ilwaco at 6 p.m. on Monday
