BOYS PREP SOCCER
Aberdeen 1, W.F. West 0
Aberdeen’s Evan Cone has a flair for making dramatic goals.
Similar to his golden overtime goal in last season’s state playoffs, Cone came up clutch on Friday with a goal in the final minute of overtime to lead the Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over first-place W.F. West at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats (4-6, 3-4 2A Evergreen) and Bearcats (8-2, 7-1) played it close through the first and second halves of the game, with both teams unable to convert on multiple chances in the opposing third.
It was until late in the second overtime, with just a minute to spare, that Cone and company produced the electric game-winner.
After a shot sailed just wide by senior forward Elmer Torres and a key save of a header by Cats keeper Jazir Arenal in the second overtime, Aberdeen had possession with a throw in.
Senior defender Isaiah Johnson made a long throw in that found junior midfielder Leo Garcia, who played it wide to junior winger Marc Avila.
Avila crossed it to Cone, who split two defenders with a touch then slotted a shot past the oncoming Bearcats keeper for the game-ending goal.
“This was a great win for us when we really needed it,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Hopefully, it will set us on the path to more wins in the second half of league play.”
Aberdeen’s JV team (7-0-1) won 1-0 with Ethan Parris scoring a goal for the Bobcats.
Aberdeen’s C-team won 2-0 over W.F. West on Wednesday in Chehalis. Oscar Leiva and Luis Arevalo scored for the Bobcats.
Aberdeen hosts Black Hills at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
