Raymond-South Bend 2, Elma 1

An Adam Mora goal late in the game turned out to be the difference as Raymond-South Bend remained unbeaten on the season with a key 2-1 victory over Elma in a 1A Evergreen League match on Tuesday at Sanchez Field in South Bend.

The Ravens (7-0 overall, 7-0 1A Evergreen) and Eagles (4-3, 4-3) both played their signature styles in a back-and-forth contest, with RSB playing for the long ball over the defense while Elma used its pass-and-possession game to create its chances.

It wasn’t until late in the first half the scoreless tie was broken, and it was Raymond-South Bend that struck first.

Senior forward and former Aberdeen standout Evan Cone sent a long throw-in to sophomore forward Jose Ramirez, who secured the ball in the box and scored to put the Ravens up 1-0 in the 37th minute.

Trailing by a goal at the half, Elma tied the game on a set play after the Eagles earned a free kick on a Ravens foul just outside the corner of the 18-yard box.

Eagles senior midfielder Ivan Torres sent the ball in toward freshman midfielder Manny Venegas, who headed it into the net to make it a 1-1 score in the 55th minute.

“We started to get more control down into the offensive end and had a couple good shots on goal,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “(Ivan) played a really nice ball in and Manny just buried it home.”

With 10 minutes to play, Elma was fouled a few feet outside the 18-yard box and just missed a potential go-ahead goal on a header.

The ball was cleared by the Ravens and a misplay of the ball by the Elma defense created an odd-man rush for RSB. The Ravens played the ball ahead on a 2-on-1 to sophomore forward Adam Mora, who turned it into a 1-on-1 and scored in the 70th minute for a 2-1 lead.

“It’s unfortunate because it was an unforced error that put them in that 1-on-1 situation with us,” said Seaberg, who commended the play of Ivan Torres, sophomore midfielder Diego Morales and sophomore forward Luis Torres. “Unfortunately, we just weren’t able to do what we needed to. … We gave them fits, but we’ve got to start finishing.”

With the victory, RSB remains tied atop the 1A Evergreen League with Montesano.

The Ravens will take on the Bulldogs in a first-place showdown at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Montesano.

Elma sits in fourth place in the league standings and will face forks at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Davis Field in Elma.
