The focus of about a half-dozen professional scouts on Wednesday, Chehalis pitcher Brandon White presumably impressed Aberdeen’s hitters as well.
White struck out 11 in six scoreless innings as the Bearcats spoiled Aberdeen’s Evergreen 2A Conference baseball opener, 10-0, on Wednesday at Pioneer Park.
A fine all-around athlete who has already signed a baseball letter of intent with Washington State, White mixed a fastball that was estimated in the low 90s with a sharp breaking ball. He allowed only two infield singles and one walk in his six-inning stint.
The Bobcats (0-1, 2-3), however, were more competitive than the score indicated. Most of Chehalis’ damage was confined to a four-run fifth inning and a five-run seventh. The other Bearcat run came when Lane Douglass and Brak Jones pulled off a successful double steal of home and second in the first inning.
While the pro scouts on hand put away their speed guns when Aberdeen’s Austin Timmons was pitching, the senior right-hander was very effective for most of his mound appearance. Pitching out of a couple of jams, Timmons allowed only one run through four innings.
All things considered, Bobcat coach Shon Schreiber wasn’t overly disappointed.
“Timmons threw a great ball-game,” Schreiber said. “We’ve got a kid throwing 91-92 mph against us, he’s got scouts looking at him. He’s probably the best we’ll see all year.”
The Bobcats threatened only once. Trailing only 1-0 at the time, they loaded the bases with one out in the fourth when Gio Pisani and Josh Germeaux sandwiched infield singles around a walk to Eli Brown.
A third strike to Jaxson Larson got away from catcher Drew Reynolds. With first base occupied and less than two outs, Larson was automatically out on the play and Pisani was doubled up at the plate when Reynolds threw to White covering home.
Reasoning that his team’s chances of manufacturing a big inning against White were slim, Schreiber acknowledged that he gambled by sending Pisani home.
“I’m just trying to find a way to scratch out a run some way,” the AHS coach said. “It didn’t work.”
The Bearcats then broke it open by touching Timmons and reliever Pisani for four runs in the fifth, with Le’Andre Gaines’ RBI double the big blow.
The same two teams are scheduled to collide Thursday at Chehalis.
