LYNCHBURG — Finishing with three consecutive wins, Grays Harbor College placed ninth in the NCWA National Wrestling Duals last weekend at Liberty University.
After opening with losses to host Liberty, 48-7, and Maryland-Baltimore County, 35-24, the Chokers downed Washington State, 43-16, Maine, 48-11, and Toledo, 33-19.
Exceeding their 10th seed, the Chokers earned nine national points that will be added to their team score at the national meet in March.
Grays Harbor’s Ke’Vionne Robbins at 133, Josh Pine (165), Mason McKenzie (197), Jack Moen (235) and Thomas Steiler recorded pins against Washington State.
Choker 197-pounder Jack Dahlgren recorded the most impressive win against Maine (GHC coach Phillip Pine said he was told that the schools were 3,374 miles apart). The fomer Forks standout convincingly beat two-time All-American River Robertson, 9-2.
Steiler needed only 41 seconds to pin his opponent against Toledo. Choker 141-pounder Damon Thomas nearly pulled off an upset against Toledo All-American D’Ante Evans. Only seconds away from recording a match-tying takedown, Thomas dropped a 6-4 decision.
