Grays Harbor College has decided to part ways with men’s basketball head coach Alonzo Cole after two seasons.
In his time at GHC, Cole posted a record of 9-43, going 3-11 in league play and 7-22 overall last season.
“I was in full recruiting mode, with the college’s blessing, when I was called into my Athletic Director’s office and fired,” Cole said. “I was totally blindsided. We worked hard in our efforts to bring a corner turning team to Grays Harbor. It is unfortunate that I was afforded only two years to construct a winning way.”
GHC Athletic Director Tom Sutera declined to comment on the firing.
Cole, a native of Flint, Michigan, who resides in Aberdeen, played basketball at Morehead State University and spent time in the European basketball league. However, Cole had never been a head coach until he was hired by GHC in March of 2015.
Cole said he felt he had shown enough improvement over the past two seasons to keep his position, but added that he had significant differences with the administration.
“GHC wanted to move in a different direction, and I am good with that,” Cole said. “I wish them the very best in their program. I hope that in some small way I impacted those young men’s lives in a positive way.”
GHC posted the position on Friday and are taking applications as part of its search for the next head coach. Sutera said the college has no particular timeline to fill the position.
“We will be taking applications for a couple weeks and seeing where that leads us, interviewing and going on from there,” Sutera said. “We just listed it as the position is open until filled. We will go a couple weeks anyway and see what we have for applicants and we will move forward.”
