Grays Harbor 7, Blue Mountain 3

Grays Harbor College salvaged the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader against Blue Mountain with a memorable 7-2 victory.

The Chokers were led by starting pitcher Diego Morfin and reliever Skylar Bove, which combined to allow one earned run on three hits to lead GHC to victory.

Morfin started the game and allowed two runs – one earned – on two this and two walks with two strikeouts before giving way to Bove with two outs and the bases loaded up 4-1 in the fifth inning.

A GHC error allowed a run to cross but Bove – who graduated from Montesano High School last year – got Timberwolves designated hitter Jagger Ruhter to ground out to end the frame with minimal damage done.

GHC added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by third baseman Derek Homer and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Homer doubled to chase home outfielder Kaleb Ames, staking the Chokers to a 7-2 lead.

Meanwhile, Bove was on cruise control, retiring nine of the final 10 batters he faced over the final three innings of the game to secure the victory, which was a meaningful one for Bove and his teammates after the right-handed reliever’s father, Steve Bove, passed away in February.

“I can’t say enough about Diego and Sklyar coming in and pitched the way they did,” GHC interim head coach Curtis Eccles said. “It was a pretty emotional game for Skylar after losing his dad and I was really proud of the way they came and pitched on the mound.”

Homer led the way with two of GHC’s eight hits in the game while driving in three runs.

After starting off the season getting swept by Columbia Basin in a four-game set the previous weekend, Eccles said the offense and pitching came together at the right time for the team’s first victory of the season.

“(Morfin and Bove) combining to only give up three hits and being able, offensively, to give them some run support with seven runs and eight hits was what we needed for both the pitchers and hitters to come together like we knew they could,” he said. “It’s good to get our first win and know they know what it feels like.”

The Chokers face Walla Walla in a double header starting at noon on Saturday at Big Bend Community College.
