CENTRALIA — It was a very good start for four Grays Harbor softball teams in Centralia on Wednesday afternoon.
Kicking off the District IV 1A tournament and continuing the 2B district tournament, Harbor teams went 4-1 on the day to advance into their respective brackets.
In the 1A district tournament, Montesano, Hoquiam and Elma all won to move into the semifinals. In the 2B district tournament, Ocosta won its loser-out contest to stay alive, while North Beach fell in its first game of the tournament.
Results from Wednesday’s contests were not available at press time. A full roundup of the day’s games will be posted online at www.thedailyworld.com.
1A District Bulldogs 16, Beavers 1 (3)
Montesano, the Evergreen 1A League champions, began its postseason run against league rival Tenino on Wednesday.
Led by four hits and three RBI from lead-off batter Cheyann Bartlett, the Bulldogs cruised into the semifinals via the 15-run, three-inning mercy rule.
Bartlett slugged two doubles and a home run, a lead-off solo homer in the second inning, to lead the Bulldogs. Ashley Black also drove in three runs. Annie Cristelli earned the win in the circle, striking out eight and walking two.
Montesano took on rival Hoquiam in the district semifinal, with the winner earning a state berth.
Eagles 11, Bruins 0 (5)
An 11-run first inning was all Elma needed to move into the district semifinals against White Salmon on Wednesday.
Beginning with a grand slam over the left-center field fence by Peyton Elliott and finishing with a two-run double by Kali Rambo, the Eagles scored 11 and were never threatened by the Bruins.
In the circle, Quin Mikel and Corrina Torres shared a five-inning, one-hitter, with Mikel getting the win with four innings of work.
Elma took on La Center in the other district semifinal contest. The winner secured a state tournament berth and a spot in Saturday’s district title game against the winner of the Montesano-Hoquiam game.
Grizzlies 3, Rockets 0
Held hitless through the first four innings, Hoquiam got onto the board with two runs in the fifth inning and rode starting pitcher English Hyde for the win and a semifinal game berth.
Paige Folkers broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning with a single and scored on a two-out RBI single from Kylee Bagwell. Bagwell moved to second on the throw home and later scored on an RBI infield single by Jade Cox.
In the sixth inning, Hoquiam got an insurance run on Ashley Paladin’s RBI single to score Maya Jump.
Hyde picked up the win in the circle, striking out four and walking one. She also got excellent defense behind her, with Folkers noted for her work at second base.
2B District Wildcats 13, Cardinals 3 (5)
After being held to just one hit and two base runners for an entire contest in the district quarterfinals on Tuesday, Ocosta broke out its bats to thump Winlock in a loser-out contest on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats will take on the winner of the Toledo-South Bend game in another loser-out contest today at 4 p.m. at Borst Park. A win today will send Ocosta (20-2), the Pacific 2B League champions, to a series of seeding games, but not a state berth without a win, on Saturday.
Kaylee Barnum and Mekenna Fletcher each hit two home runs for Ocosta in the game. Barnum, who finished with five RBI, had two inside-the-park home runs — a two-run sprint in the first inning and a three-run gallop in the third. Fletcher slugged a solo home run following Barnum’s round-tripper in the first and added a two-run blast in the fourth.
Erica Snider picked up the win in relief for Ocosta, coming in for Fletcher in the second inning and holding Winlock to just one run in the seventh inning.
Pirates 23, Hyaks 0
North Beach finally got its district quarterfinal contest in on Wednesday after two days of rain delays, but Adna was well prepared.
In a three-inning game, the Pirates sent the Hyaks (10-8) into a loser-out contest on Wednesday evening.
