Several Twin Harbors prep volleyball teams looked to keep their seasons alive as district-tournament week continued on Wednesday.
Raymond one win away from state tournament
After splitting its first two games on Saturday, the Raymond Seagulls bounced back with a pair of wins on Wednesday and are one win away from the state tournament.
The Seagulls survived through the elimination bracket with straight-set victories over Pacific League rivals North Beach and Ocosta to advance to the consolation semifinals, one win away from a spot in the 2B State Tournament.
Playing on its home court, Raymond (17-4 overall) defeated North Beach (6-12) 25-19, 25-7 and 25-12 to knock the Hyaks out of the tournament and advance to face Ocosta.
The Wildcats (10-11) defeated South Bend (7-11) in straight-sets in its opening game on Wednesday, led by Brynn Rasmus (18 assists, 11-11 service, 8 digs), Alexia Bradley (9 kills, 7 solo blocks) and Emily Scott (4 aces, 22 points served).
South Bend was led by Raydynn Morley (21-22 service), Makaylee Kuiken (100% service, 12 digs) and Kendall Harriman (100% service, 4 kills, 4 digs, 3 blocks) in the season-ending loss.
Raymond downed Ocosta for the third time this season, winning in straight sets 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17 behind the play of Karsyn Freeman (13 kills) and Megan Kongbouakhay (22 assists).
“We did a great job serving and in serve-receive,” Raymond head coach Julie Jewell said. “We handled their offense well, anticipating their tips and hits. We did a good job of communicating too.”
Ocosta was led by Rasmus (14 assists), Bradley (6 kills, 3 blocks), Alexandria Matthews (6 kills), Millie Tucker (8-8 service) and Noel Cuzdey (24 digs).
“Raymond had some tough servers that gave us some trouble,” Ocosta head coach Emily Snider said. “I felt like we attacked and played some solid defense. … Overall, I am incredibly proud of the heart my team played with tonight.”
Raymond will face the state’s fourth-ranked team — the Adna Pirates (15-4) — in a game at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Raymond High School.
The winner will earn a berth in the state tournament. The loser will move into the district fifth/sixth-place game for a shot at the district’s final state-playoff spot.
Willapa Valley advances in 1B tournament
The Willapa Valley Vikings staved off elimination and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 1B District 4 Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Pe Ell on Wednesday at Willapa Valley High School.
The Vikings (12-6) won 25-11, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-18.
“We started off strong and came out attacking, but got too relaxed in the next matches,” Willapa Valley head coach Karisa Hodel said. “Once we started talking and found the flow of the game, we were able to get the win.”
Willapa Valley was led by Grace Huber (11 kills, 18 digs, 18 blocks, 8 solo blocks), Lauryn McGough (17 digs, 12 kills) and Sam Sheary (3 aces, 19 assists).
