Monday Roundup: Down 2-0, Elma rallies to beat Columbia-White Salmon

Elma rallied from down two games to earn a thrilling win over Columbia-White Salmon 3-2 on Monday, Sept. 12, in Elma.

Elma (1-1 overall) fell behind 2-0 after losing the first two games by scores of 25-17 and 25-18.

But behind a the play of senior Brooklyne Swarts, junior Taylor Staples and senior Torrey Thompson, Elma rallied to win the next three games 25-16, 26-24 and 15-13 to earn a thrilling victory.

“It was a great comeback for our team tonight,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said. “We had a slow start but we were able to come back with more energy to win in five tonight. I’m proud of our team’s resilience and am looking forward to our match on Wednesday.”

Swarts led the Eagles with 14 kills with Staples leading the Elma defense with 21 digs.

Thompson recorded a team high eight aces to go along with seven kills.

Elma’s JV team lost 27-25, 25-14 and 15-2 on Monday as did the Eagles C-team, losing by scores of 25-8, 25-11 and 15-6.

Elma will host Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Hoquiam 3, Rochester 0

Hoquiam got off to a hot start and never looked back in a straight-set victory over Rochester on Monday at Rochester High School.

The Grizzlies (2-0) showed no signs of early-season rust in winning the first two sets by identical 25-15 scores.

Rochester (1-1) rallied in the third set to keep it close, but Hoquiam’s offense and net presence was too much for the Braves to handle as the Grizzlies took the third set 25-23.

“We started off really strong and we were able to run our offense how we wanted,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “All credit to Rochester with their tough serving and blocking to keep us off balance. We still have a lot of work to do, but I’m happy we got the win tonight.”

The Grizzlies’ Faith Prosch had nine kills and kept Rochester out of system with a strong service game.

Hoquiam’s Chloe Kennedy had nine kills to go along with eight digs and “played really well at the net,” according to Bozich.

Graci Bonney-Spradlin led Hoquiam with 12 digs.

Next up for the Grizzlies is a Myrtle Street Rivalry matchup against Aberdeen at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Aberdeen High School.

Hoquiam 1, Ocosta 1

Hoquiam and Ocosta played to a 1-1 draw on Monday in Westport.

Hoquiam (0-0-1) got on the board first when junior Paige Shope scored off an assist from junior Jemima Perez in the 27th minute.

Oocsta (0-2-1) knotted the game up when Miki Ness scored off a rebound of a Natalie Carloza shot in the 39th minute.

Grizzlies keeper Chole Dietrick and Ocosta netminder Mia Saunders each recorded seven saves in the contest.

Hoquiam held a 20-17 advantage in shots.

“I liked how our girls looked tonight, they played very well as a team,” said Hoquiam head coach John Johnson, whose team was making its season debut. “They created a lot of opportunities to score. Now, we just need to clean it up. We have a great group and plenty of room to grow from here.”

“Both teams played hard,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We started slow and Hoquiam controlled the first 30 minutes. We’ll get a good practice in on Tuesday to work on our weaknesses.”

Ocosta standout Kylee Denny left the game in the second half with a fracture in her lower leg and will be out for four weeks.

Ocosta hosts Winlock at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hoquiam hosts Onalaska at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Olympic Stadium.
