Elma 1-2 after first three Little League West Regional games

Eagles beat Oregon followed by losses to Southern California, Hawaii

The Elma Intermediate all-stars are 1-2 after their first three games at the Little League Intermediate 50/70 West Regional in Nogales, Arizona.

Game 1

Elma 6, Oregon 3

Elma benefited from consistent scoring a a quality pitching performance en route to a 6-3 win over Oregon in its regional opener on Friday.

Elma took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Jackson Bucy RBI double followed by an RBI single off the bat of Bryston Crawford.

After Oregon tied it with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, Elma regained the lead with a run in the second when Hunter Young crossed the plate on a balk.

Elma tacked on a run when Bucy drove in Troy Rupe with an RBI single in the top of the third.

After Oregon cut Elma’s lead to 4-3 with a run in the fourth, the Eagles got a run in the sixth on a Rupe double followed by a James Modersohn RBI single in the seventh.

Treycen Sample struck out the side in the seventh to earn the save and complete the victory.

Modersohn picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings pitched.

Rupe and Bucy had two hits apiece for Elma.

Game 2

Southern California 13, Elma 3

Elma struggled to slow a powerhouse Southern California team in a 13-3 loss on Saturday.

SoCal put the game away early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first and five in the second to put the contest into mercy-rule territory after just two innings.

Down 13-0, Elma scored three runs in the fifth on an RBI fielder’s choice ground out by Crawford, a run-scoring triple by Sample and an RBI single by Jace Gustafson.

Southern California had 14 hits in the game, including four triples and three doubles.

Elma had five base hits, one apiece from five different players.

Game 3

Hawaii 12, Elma 2

Elma had troubles finding much offense in a 12-2 mercy-rule loss to Hawaii on Sunday.

The Eagles scored a run in the top of the first on a Bucy single to chase home Jordan Lisle – on board with a leadoff walk – but didn’t score another run until the fifth when Sample tripled and crossed the plate on a Modersohn sacrifice fly.

Hawaii, meanwhile, scored a pair of runs in each of the first three innings and pulled away with a five-run fifth.

Hawaii had 11 hits in the game and benefited from five walks and three Elma errors, leading to four unearned runs.

Elma is scheduled to take on Arizona in its fourth round-robin game at 5 p.m. on Monday.
