Elma’s Espinoza, Hoquiam’s Bryson win state titles at Mat Classic

Pair of top-flight seniors lead strong contingent of Twin Harbors wrestlers at state finale

Two state champions highlighted a group of eight Twin Harbors state finalists at the conclusion of the Mat Classic XXXVI state-championship wrestling tournament on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

Leading the way for area athletes was Elma’s Xavier Espinoza and Hoquiam’s Oliver Bryson, each of whom were crowned state champions after winning their respective weight classes.

Espinoza (36-1 overall), a 113-pound junior, won three matches to advance to the final, where he defeated Life Christian Academy’s Elijah Miller via 12-1 major decision to win the 1A-class title.

It was the first state championship for Espinoza, who placed second at the Mat Classic the two previous years.

Bryson (34-1) cruised through the 1A’s 190-pound weight class, pinning three opponents to advance to Saturday’s title match against Kalama’s Zach Foreman.

Bryson patiently dismantled Foreman, in the final, pinning the Chinook grappler at 2:48 to earn his first state title in his third trip to the season’s final meet.

Six other Harbor wrestlers advanced to the final to earn second place in the state.

Montesano’s Finley Ekerson (106 pounds) and Felix Romero (215) each placed second to lead the Bulldogs boys team to a fourth-place state finish with 168.5 points.

Elma placed sixth overall (150.5 points) with Hoquiam 12th in the team standings (84).

In the girls competition, a pair of Aberdeen Bobcats advanced to their respective state final to lead the Cats to a fifth-place finish with 152.5 points.

Aberdeen’s all-time girls wrestling wins leader Felicia Bell placed second after losing a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Orting’s Madison Watts in the 125-pound final.

Aberdeen’s Abby Warmoth (190 pounds), North Beach’s Mayra Strandberg and Raymond-South Bend’s Nina Siribun also placed second at the state meet.
