Forks senior Marky Adams reintroduced himself to Hoquiam and its fans on Senior Night and stole the show.
Dominating the paint, readjusting the Grizzlies’ offense and powering the Spartans’ attack, Adams used his 6-foot-9 height and long wing span to take over this 68-54 Evergreen 1A League boys basketball victory at Hoquiam Square Garden on Friday.
Adams easily led all scorers with 32 points, 21 rebounds and six blocked shots for Forks (4-2, 12-6). (stats)
“He had a heck of a game,” HHS head coach Curtis Eccles said of Marky Adams. “He made the difference inside. He had a presence. You have to give him credit. He was not as effective when we faced them the first time at their place like he was tonight. His teammates did a great job of getting him the ball. He was the difference.”
Forks let Hoquiam know from the get-go that it was going to feed its senior center all night and force the hosts to do something about it.
In the first quarter, the Grizzlies did, getting the Spartans into a running game and transition basketball contest. An 11-0 run in the final 3 minutes of the frame that saw four Grizzlies — Jace Varner, Anthony Nash, Zach Spradlin and Jerod Steen — get into the action to create an 18-13 lead.
Senior Parker Browning was the outside balance for the Spartans, but he was limited due to back troubles. He spent time on the bench standing to relieve the pain as his teammates cooked up possession after possession for Adams to eat.
Adams easily scooped up rebounds, limited Hoquiam to just one possession and extended plays for Forks at the other end. He scored his team’s final nine points of the first half to send the visitors running off with a 30-27 halftime lead. This would be the closest Hoquiam would get for the rest of the game.
“We talked about what to do next time, because we don’t have size,” Eccles said. “We have to make up for it in other places. At the same time, we need to defend szie like that. We need to do a better job of being in the right places, to double team when we need to and even triple team when we have to. That makes them rely upon their other shooters.”
Just as Forks heated up with Adams in the paint and plenty of support on the perimeter, Hoquiam’s offense cooled. The Grizzlies went through dry spells from the perimeter and were closed off in the paint on drives and interior shots. When the Spartans had a run of missed shots, they’d feed Adams again for easy baskets and free throws to extend the lead.
Browning and Adams combined for 13 of Forks’ 19 points in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
On Monday, Hoquiam travels to rival Aberdeen for a non-league matchup at Sam Benn Gym.
