Bulldogs 62, Spartans 6
MONTESANO — Carson Klinger ran for four touchdowns, Dakoyta Reninger threw for one touchdown and caught another one and Carson’s brother, Hayden, ran back a fumble recovery for a score in Montesano’s Evergreen 1A League-opening win over Forks at Rottle Field on Friday night.
The fourth-ranked Bulldogs led 42-0 at the half, kicking off the mercy-rule running clock for the second half. Montesano ran for 327 yards on the night, with Carson Klinger leading the way with 135 yards on 11 carries and four scores.
“I just thought we really controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides and that was a big key,” Montesano head coach Terry Jensen said. “I was very impressed with how well we played on both sides of the ball.”
Carson Klinger ran in from 2, 14, 10 and 4 yards out, while Reninger threw a 41-yard halfback pass to Nate Chapman (three catches, 53 yards) for a touchdown late in the first quarter. Reninger then caught a Trevor Ridgway 11-yard touchdown pass in the last seconds of the first quarter.
Offensive/defensive lineman Hayden Klinger scooped up a fumble recovery and ran 75 yards for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. Nathan Olson (eight carries, 82 yards) and Sam Winter each had touchdown runs for Montesano as well.
Larry Dwyer kicked 8-of-9 PAT attempts on the night.
Coach Jensen cited Hayden Klinger, Kai Olson, Taylor Rupe and Cole Bradbury for their work on defense.
On Friday, Montesano (1-0, 5-0) will hit the road to take on R.A. Long in a non-league contest.
Seagulls 46, Hyaks 20
RAYMOND — Raymond took advantage of a few halftime adjustments to run away from North Beach in the second half and claim victory in this Pacific 2B League rivalry game at Raymond on Friday.
Leading 20-14 at halftime, the Seagulls (1-0, 3-2) took advantage of a defensive mismatch to hit a 44-yard touchdown pass from Kason Koski to Jace Duckworth early in the third quarter. The Gulls would control the game the rest of the way, adding up 442 yards of total offense on the night.
“I knew coming in that it was going to be a dogfight,” Raymond coach Luke Abbott said. “We put together some drives, but we also had some turnovers and shot ourselves in the foot. We made some adjustments at halftime and tried to put the ball in our athletes’ hands and let them run with it.”
Raymond’s offense was fueled by Duckworth, who rushed for 147 yards on 12 carries, had 63 yards receiving and three total touchdowns, and Patrick Edwards, who rushed for 162 yards and four touchdowns.
North Beach (0-1, 2-3) has been hampered by injuries and was not at full strength to face the Gulls.
“Hats off to Raymond,” North Beach coach Todd Bridge said. “They outhit, out-tackled and out-blocked us. They were well-coached and had a good game scheme coming in. It would have been nice to play them with all of our horses healthy, but when you lose two guys in a meaningless non-league game before you played Raymond, the deal is probably sealed.”
Raymond got on the scoreboard on its first drive with Edwards running in from 12 yards out to grab a 7-0 lead, but North Beach was quick to answer on the next possession. Ben Poplin scored on a 17-yard run and ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Hyaks an 8-7 lead.
Edwards found the end zone again late in the first quarter on 45 yard run to put Raymond back on top, but again the Hyaks answered. North Beach was able to connect on a 21-yard pass play to tie the game up, but the Hyaks failed on the 2-point conversion to keep the score knotted at 14-14.
With a little more than a minute left in the first half, Koski hit Duckworth for a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the Gulls the lead for good.
After the 44-yard connection, Duckworth added another score on an 80-yard run to cap the third quarter. It would be Edwards scoring on runs of 12 and 49 yards in the fourth quarter as the Gulls continued to light up the scoreboard.
North Beach’s lone score in the second half came on a 35-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Brenden Chaney.
Abbott cited the Gulls defensive line for a solid performance as a group.
Raymond travels to Ilwaco next Friday, while North Beach hosts Ocosta.
Titans 48, Wildcats 0
WESTPORT — Kaelin Jurek scored three touchdowns, while Pe Ell-Willapa Valley limited Ocosta to only one first down in a Pacific League opener Friday at Griffin Field.
Jurek opened the scoring with a 75-yard punt return and later added touchdown runs of 7 and 42 yards in the first quarter.
Ever Gutierrez added scoring runs of 4 and 3 yards in the second period.
Tyler Justice’s 1-yard run and Keyton Barnum’s 3-yard run in the third quarter concluded the scoring for the Titans (1-0, 3-2). Tyson Nissell kicked four conversions.
Ocosta (0-1, 2-2) recovered its own onside kick on the opening kickoff but little went right for the Wildcats after that. The Wildcats netted only 19 yards of total offense.
“Offensively, we just looked lost,” Wildcat coach Brian Snell said. “We lined up in the wrong formation on the first play. They brought a lot of pressure and they brought more than we could block. They were a little salty from the loss to Toledo (last week) and wanted to make sure people knew who they were.”
Justice rushed for 86 yards on 15 carries, while Jurek picked up 75 yards on seven carries. Titan quarterback Matt Pearson completed all four of his passes for 105 yards.
Dereck Thomas had 10 tackles for Ocosta, while teammate Cosmo Silver contributed two tackles for losses.
Snell cited the effort of his team.
“We were heavily outmatched, but we tried to make them earn their yards,” the Ocosta coach concluded.
On Friday, PWV takes on South Bend at Pe Ell, while Ocosta visits North Beach.
Fishermen 21, Indians 6
SOUTH BEND — Monopolizing possession in the first half, Ilwaco turned back South Bend in a Pacific League opener Friday at Millam Field.
The Indians (0-1, 2-3) demonstrated considerable improvement defensively, but were unable to overcome four fumbles — two on kickoffs. That enabled Ilwaco to run 30 more plays than South Bend (44-14) in the first half.
After Ilwaco’s Jack Odneal opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the second quarter, the Tribe muffed the ensuing onside kick. The Fishermen scored on that possession as well, with Brandon McMullen running it in from 2 yards out.
McMullen added a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Quarterback Ben Byington scored the lone South Bend TD with a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.
“Defensively, we might have found something. We played with our backs against the wall a lot and had some success,” South Bend coach Tom Sanchez said. “That being said, we allowed some conversions on third and fourth downs. And offensively, we need to show up to start a game.”
South Bend’s Josiah Markwell contributed to 25 tackles, while Byington had 15 stops.
A.J. Sanchez led Tribe rushers with 85 yards on 15 carries.
South Bend faces Pe Ell-Willapa Valley on Friday at Pe Ell.
