Friday Prep Roundup: Montesano girls knock off Tumwater

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bulldogs 60, Tumwater 36

TUMWATER — Despite a slow start, Montesano built a double-digit lead by halftime and rolled to victory over Tumwater in a non-league game on Friday.

The Bulldogs (5-1) missed their first six foul shots and trailed 5-0 early in the first quarter, but Montesano’s defensive pressure gave Tumwater fits at times and allowed the Bulldogs to go on a 15-4 run at the end of the quarter. Monte didn’t give back the lead on its way to victory.

“We got off to a slow start,” Monte coach Julie Graves said. “The girls rebounded well and got after it on defense. Hannah Quinn got into the game and made some things happen on the defensive end. It was a very physical game. We are happy to get out of there with a convincing win.”

The Bulldogs were led by double-doubles from seniors Shayla Floch and Jordan Spradlin. Floch finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Spradlin added 22 points and 19 rebounds.

Montesano travels to Aberdeen on Tuesday.

The Mustangs (1-1 in league) led 27-23 at the half and blew the game open by outscoring the Loggers 25-11 in the third quarter.

“Our field-goal shooting wasn’t good, so we went to a pressure defense to get turnovers and it worked,” North River coach Sean Pierson said.

“They came out in the third quarter and put a zone press on us and we kind of fell apart,” Wishkah coach Stefanie Baltzell agreed.

It was the first time North River had beaten Wishkah since 2010.

Gulls 78, Navigators 76, OT

LACEY — Devine Souvannavanh sank two foul shots with one second remaining in overtime as Raymond outlasted Northwest Christian in a Pacific League game Friday at Lacey.

It was ironic that the Gulls (2-1, 4-1) won this at the foul line, as they missed several free throws that could have sealed the deal in regulation.

With the game tied at 76, Souvannavanh was fouled on a desperation shot from backcourt. He made the first and third free throws.

“I’m proud of the guys for staying focused and pulling out the victory at the end,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said.

Kason Koski led the Gulls with 23 points. Souvannavanh added 15 points and Luke Hamilton 14 for Raymond.

Warriors 90, Wildcats 76

WESTPORT — Chief Leschi cleaned the glass, hit open shots and cleaned up a victory against Ocosta in a fast-paced Pacific 2B League game on Friday.

The Wildcats (1-3, 3-4) kept pace with the Warriors throughout the contest, but Chief Leschi was able to create an edge controlling the offensive rebounds for second-chance points.

“We stayed in front of the ball much better, but we need to keep working on it,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “When we had a good defensive possession, they took a miss. We just need to get better on defense.”

Ocosta’s Zach Allton finished with 30 points on the night. Quinby cited the junior for his offense and defensive play as Allton drew one of the tougher defensive matchups.

Dereck Thomas was ruled ineligible for the remainder of the season by school officials on Friday.
