Montesano and Raymond-South Bend both dominated on the gridiron as we take a look at Friday’s prep sports acton on the Twin Harbors.
FOOTBALL
Montesano 49, Hoquiam 3
Even when they aren’t racking up insane offensive numbers, the Montesano Bulldogs can dominate.
Monte collected five turnovers and scored 42 points in the first half en route to a 49-7 victory over Hoquiam on Friday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.
The Bulldogs (5-0 overall, 4-0 1A Evergreen) got off to a hot start when junior Konnor Odekirk returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
Monte showed no signs of slowing up on its next offensive possession, doubling its lead when senior receiver Christian Prall caught a perfectly thrown deep ball from senior quarterback Trace Ridgway for a 33-yard touchdown .
The lead was stretched to 21-0 when senior defensive back Colby Adams intercepted Hoquiam quarterback Junior Ensminger and returned it 70 yards for a pick-6 touchdown and a 21-0 Monte lead halfway through the first quarter.
Hoquiam (1-4, 1-4) was able to move the ball into Montesano territory early in the second quarter and broke the shutout on a 29-yard field goal from kicker Trey Brydon.
But Montesano immediately responded, capping another scoring drive on its ensuing possession with a 7-yard touchdown run from Ridgway at the 8:26 mark of the second quarter.
Ridgway repeated the feat, this time on a 27-yard scoring run with 5:16 left in the first half.
Adams scored on a 17 yard TD run with just under a minute left in the half to push the Bulldogs’ halftime lead to 42-3.
A Ridgway touchdown pass for 15 yards to senior receiver Connar Hollatz late in the third quarter started a running clock and allowed the Bulldogs to rest its starters for the remainder of the contest.
“Our defense has played well all season and we’ve always prided ourselves on our defense,” said Montesano head coach Terry Jensen, whose team intercepted Ensminger four times and recovered a fumble, keeping the majority of play in Hoquiam’s defensive end. “It was a lot of huge momentum plays. Those are a lot of huge momentum plays and we just fed off of it. … That’s when we play our best, is when the defense sets the tone.”
Montesano rushed for 116 yards as a team while Ridgway was 7-for-12 for 113 yards passing, a touchdown and two interceptions.
A banged-up Hoquiam squad managed just 179 yards of total offense, with Ensminger going -for-23 for 78 yards and four picks in place of the Grizzlies typical starter, Dane McMillan.
“We’re hit with the injury bug right now and have a lot of less-experienced guys in positions,” Hoquiam head coach Jeremy McMillan said. “I’m proud of the young guys and how they battled.”
McMillan added to beat a team the quality of Monte, mistakes must be limited and his team didn’t do that on Friday.
“You can’t start the game that way (allowing a kickoff return for a TD), not against a team like Monte. We had four interceptions and a fumble on another play,” he said. “They’re a great team and I think if it’s a non-COVID year I think Montesano represents the Evergreen League very well in the state playoffs.”
“We knew Hoquiam was down. They have a lot of guys banged-up and on crutches,” Jensen said. “Hats off to them. They had a lot of guys that came out and competed hard.”
Hoquiam will close out its season next week by taking on Aberdeen in the Myrtle Street Rivalry at Stewart Field in Aberdeen on Saturday.
Montesano ends the season on Saturday by taking on Black Hills at Tumwater High School.
For a team widely regarded a state-championship caliber, Jensen said the character of this group rivals the best teams he has coached during his tenure in Montesano.
“I told them before the game, ‘The greatest thing about this season is you guys. The seniors,’” he said. “All the crap we’ve had to go through this year, with COVID and everything else, these guys have come out and worked hard to get better everyday. … There are just a lot of things they’ve been resilient about. … They have just been outstanding. … It’s too bad there isn’t any playoffs this year.”
