RAYMOND — Overcoming a seven-run deficit, Raymond notched its first baseball victory in 59 years by overcoming Lake Quinault in 10 innings on Friday at S.A. Anderson Field.

The Gulls trailed 7-0 after two innings and twice came from behind in extra innings.

After Quinault scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th, Raymond’s Reese Garcia doubled home Hayden Stephens with the tying marker in the bottom half of the frame. Garcia eventually scored the winning run on a dropped third strike.

“We were able to claw back. The kids never got down on themselves,” Raymond coach Luke Abbott said.

Stephens went 4-for-6 and scored three runs. Teammate Jack Jordan doubled twice.

Allen Espinoza and Murray Cottrell were among the offensive standouts for Lake Quinault. Box-score information was unavailable.

Lake Quinault (0-2) travels to Naselle on Monday. The Gulls (1-1) open Pacific League play Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Ilwaco.

CHEHALIS — Perennial Class 2A power Chehalis limited Montesano to five hits in a non-league contest Friday at Chehalis.

Teegan Zillyett doubled and singled for the Bulldogs, but Monte otherwise had a difficult time catching up with the hard-throwing Bearcat hurlers.

”It was definitely an improvement from Monday’s game,” Montesano coach Mike Osgood said.

Osgood also cited the pitching of Evan Bates.

The Bulldogs (1-1) face another Class 2A foe Monday when they travel to Tumwater.

As has been their habit this season, the Grizzlies overcame an early deficit, trailing 2-0 after one inning.

“English righted herself (after that),” HHS coach Keith Reynvaan said. “She retired 11 in a row from the second to the sixth inning.”

The Grizzlies took the lead with a three-run third. Maddie German’s RBI double was the key blow in that inning.

Tegen Fleury doubled twice, had four of her team’s 12 stolen bases and was credited with a solid defensive outing for the Gulls (2-0).

Raymond head coach Jason Koski said his team was solid in all phases of the game and did well to make plays behind the pitcher.

“We were real patient at the plate and defensiveness we made the plays for Katie Doyle,” he said. “We have a lot of new kids but we’re starting to look a little more relaxed out there.”

Raymond will start Pacific League play with a doubleheader against Ilwaco on Wednesday. Lake Quinault visits Naselle on Monday.

BOYS SOCCER

MONTESANO — Short-handed Montesano maintained its stamina long enough to play to a scoreless tie with King’s Way Christian in a non-league match Friday at Rottle Field.

Although still not at full strength and playing their second match in as many nights, the Bulldogs surprisingly fared better in the second half.

“I was a little worried in the first half,” Monte coach Rick Denholm said. “Our touches were off and that’s sometimes a sign that you’re tied. In the second half, our touches were better. We started connecting on passes and gave us more scoring opportunities.”

He cited midfielders Jordan King and Robert Thomas, plus senior Maurillio Hernandez (who played both as a goalkeeper and in the field) for fine play.

The Bulldogs (0-2-1) visit Centralia on Tuesday.

Beavers 4, Bobcats 1

WOODLAND — Host Woodland scored twice in each half to spoil Aberdeen’s season opener on Friday at Woodland.

Bobcat coach Larry Fleming said Woodland’s ability to capitalize on its scoring opportunities represented the difference in the contest.

“It was a great effort by our boys,” Fleming said. “They made a couple of mistakes and went down a couple of goals but they didn’t hang their heads. They just kept working. That will pay off down the road.”

The Bobcats opened the scoring when freshman Angel Sanchez converted a cross from his cousin, Romeo Sanchez, only six minutes into the match. The Beavers tied it in the 28th minute and took the lead when a shot was mishandled by the goalkeeper two minutes later.

Midfielder Tony Oropeza, senior sweeper Trevor Dawkins and junior defender Christian Sanchez were cited for strong performances.

Tony Hernandez and Edgar Gaspar scored for Aberdeen in a 2-2 junior varsity tie.

The Bobcats travel to Elma on Tuesday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Bobcats 6, Hawks 0

LACEY — Dropping only one set, Aberdeen blanked River Ridge in a season-opening match Friday at Lacey.

The tightest match came in the second singles, in which Aberdeen’s Adrianna Vasquez took a ground-stroke battle from Rachel Ramsey. After the pair split sets, Vasquez won a 12-10 tiebreaker.

“A lot of girls played their first-ever tennis match,” Bobcat coach Ashley Kohlmeier noted. “We had some first-match jitters early on in some matches, but we worked through it and made good adjustments between the first and second sets.”

She cited Abbie Bradt for particular in-match improvement.
