Elma exploded for four goals in the second half in a 5-0 victory over Tenino on Friday in Tenino.
Elma (5-0-2, 5-0 1A Evergreen) got a goal from senior forward Manny Hernandez on a feed from Cason Seaberg in the ninth minute.
The Eagles would hold the 1-0 lead through the first half as Tenino (5-2, 4-1) played a defensive-minded first half with five players on the back line and four midfielders playing deep in an attempt to slow Elma’s high-octane offense.
In the second half, Hernandez returned the favor and fed Cason Seaberg for a goal and a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Then the floodgates opened.
Tenino switched back to its normal formation and the Eagles made the Beavers pay.
Elma scored three goals in a 13-minute span, with Canon Seaberg scoring two goals on a penalty kick and a feed from Cason Seaberg in the 62nd and 64th minutes, respectively, followed by a goal by senior midfielder Valencia Mendoza off a punt from goal keeper Andy Salvatierra in the 75th minute.
After the game, Elma head coach Carson Seaberg credited his team’s unselfish play as a big reason to his team’s success this season.
“Not everybody will make a run knowing they may or may not get a pass, and that is something we are really preaching and working on this year,” he said. “Maybe it’s a decoy run. Maybe it’s a run to pull the defender out of the middle of the box. Maybe you are hoping to get the soccer ball and it doesn’t come. But you are willing to do that over and over regardless of receiving a pass or not, and that’s really important to me to see that they are playing the right way.”
Elma will host Ilwaco at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13.
