Ocosta 55, South Bend 46

Ocosta jumped out to a big lead before holding off a South Bend rally as the Wildcats picked up a 55-46 victory on Friday in South Bend.

Ocosta (3-2, 1-1 2B Pacific) held a lead of 30-8 in the second quarter before South Bend (1-4, 0-4) rallied back, cutting the deficit to 42-41 midway through the fourth quarter.

“We pretty much turned the offensive faucet off and let South Bend get back to within one,” said Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby, whose team finished on a 15-3 run to close out the contest. “Thankfully for us, we were able to get back to basic offense and finish the game.”

“Ocosta came out pretty hot tonight and were very difficult to defend,” South Bend head coach Jon Schray said. “We had some costly turnovers and fouls that gave them the opportunities they needed to put the game out of reach for us.”

Xander Prigmore led Ocosta with 20 points and nine rebounds followed closely by Mark Lewis, who had 19 points and eight boards.

Josh Figueroa scored 10 points for the Wildcats.

Josh Flynn led South Bend with 13 points followed by Ty Reidinger with nine.

La Center 72, Montesano 53

La Center’s press defense was just too much for Montesano to handle as the Bulldogs fell 72-53 on Friday at Montesano High School.

Montesano (0-6 overall) led 14-9 after the first period but were outscored 63-39 the rest of the way as La Center’s press defense created turnovers and led to Montesano foul troubles.

“The press got to us,” said Montesano head coach Mike Stoddard, whose team had four players foul out of the game. “We had trouble handling the pressure they put on us and it led to too many turnovers and mistakes.”

Sophomore forward Tyce Peterson led Montesano with 14 points while the Bulldogs lone senior — forward Caydon Lovell — scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Montesano.

Chris Olson added eight points for Monte.

La Center’s Austin Nixon led all scorers with 20 points.

Montesano hosts Centralia at 7 p.m. on Monday.

PREP BOYS SWIMMING

Aberdeen 83, Kelso 74

Aberdeen started its Christmas break with a road trip to Kelso and came back with some presents and a victory on Friday evening.

Both the Bobcats and the Hilanders split the wins in this non-league dual meet, but Aberdeen’s depth – and a last-event win in the 400-yard freestyle relay – paid off in an 83-74 victory at Gaither Pool at Kelso High School.

Senior Colton Burns, junior Zach Parker and sophomore Tyler Bates each won one event, while the three of them teamed up with freshman Denny Linker to win the 400 free relay.

Linker joined seniors Foster Patterson, Jamieson Berney and Logen Seguin to win the 200 free relay for Aberdeen (1-0 overall), while Patterson joined the Burns-Parker-Bates trio in the 200 medley relay win.

“Long trip, long day, long wait, great finish against a very good Kelso team that was hit with illness – like us – before the break,” Aberdeen head coach Rob Burns said. “This was a great meet to see how competitive these guys can be, and it showed. Many of the races were close and we came away with several personal best times.”

With Aberdeen leading by four team points entering the final event, it fielded its strongest 400 free relay team. Burns, Parker and Linker gave the Bobcats a sizeable lead entering the final leg of the relay, but Kelso’s fastest sprinter, Spencer Thomas, pulled back the Bobcats.

Bates came away with a strong anchor leg of the relay and out-touched Thomas at the end for the event – and dual meet – win.

Coach Burns cited the relay teams for their strong swims, with seniors Patterson, Sequin and Berney singled out for their overall performances on the day.

After the Christmas break, Aberdeen will return to action on January 5, 2022 when it hosts district foe Shelton at the YMCA of Grays Harbor pool.
