Friday Soccer Roundup: Aberdeen stops red-hot Rochester cold

When the dust settled, it was the Bobcats that control their own destiny.

Aberdeen got a goal from senior forward Miguel Martinez and a clutch save from goal keeper Antonio Granados to snap red-hot Rochester’s four-match winning streak with a 2-1 penalty-kick shootout victory on Friday in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen (8-2-1 overall, 7-2 2A Evergreen) struck first, scoring when senior forward Kaleb Myers leaped and headed the ball toward junior midfielder Edwin Quintana, who sent a header through to senior forward Miguel Martinez.

Martinez, who had just entered the game less than a minute prior, scored to put Aberdeen up 1-0 in the 11th minute of the game.

But Rochester (5-7, 4-5), which was coming off a 3-1 win over WF West earlier in the week, responded when senior Alexis Castillo-Corona chased down a ball on and sent a long, arcing shot to the high corner of the net, past a leaping Granados to tie the game at 1-all in the 18th minute.

The game remained tied throughout the remainder of the first half, the second half and overtime periods as both teams had their chances at scoring the tiebreaker in a back-and-forth game that saw Rochester hold the edge in possession.

“It was one of the first times we didn’t have more possession than the other team,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “They have some good players that were missing the first time we played them and they are a senior-heavy team. That (Alexis Castillo-Corona) is quick. In the second half, we were able to nullify him a little bit because we put Alan Avalos on him man-t0-man. Then we put Logan Sias at sweeper and that seemed to slow him down a little bit.”

In the penalty-kick shootout, Martinez scored first to put Aberdeen up 1-0.

Granados then came up clutch, diving to his right to deflect Rochester’s first attempt out of harm’s way.

Aberdeen’s Daniel Guzman, Alan Avalos and Quintana all followed with conversions as the Bobcats went up 4-3 in the shootout.

Up stepped Aberdeen’s Julian Garcia with a chance to win the game at his feet.

The junior midfielder calmly placed a perfect shot into the left side of the net, giving Aberdeen the victory and setting off a Bobcats celebration on the Stewart Field turf.

With the win and WF West’s 2-1 loss to Centralia on Friday, Aberdeen has a comfortable two-game lead over the Bearcats in league with three games left to play.

Aberdeen is set to face Shelton on Tuesday and Black Hills on Friday, two teams that are a combined 3-14 in league play this season. The Bobcats will wrap up the regular season with a match against WF West on Thursday, May 5.

By then, Aberdeen may well have locked up one of the league’s all-important top two seeds and a home playoff game in the district tournament.

“(Rochester) is a solid team and that’s a really big win,” Fleming said. “Since West lost, second place is ours to lose. If we can win two of our next three, I don’t think anybody can catch us for second. And then we get to host, which is big.”

Fleming credited the defense of Sias, Avalos, Hugo Garcia and Javier Garcia — who saw his first action since suffering an injury the first time the two teams faced off back on March 25 — for helping to slow down a Warriors offense that had scored 14 goals in its previous four games, eight by Castillo-Corona alone.

“(Rochester) is as good as anybody in our league now with the way they are playing and now that they are healthy,” Fleming said. “We still had great chances to win the game in regulation and in overtime. … We can definitely play with anybody in this league and (this win) is another step toward getting better.”
