Montesano’s Jessica Stanfield broke a school record with her ninth home run of the season as we take a look at Friday’s prep softball action on the Twin Harbors.
Montesano 16, Hoquiam 13
Montesano and Hoquiam’s offenses combined for 30 hits as Montesano picked up a 16-13 victory in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday in Hoquiam.
In a game defined by big innings, Montesano took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, before Hoquiam responded with nine runs — four in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth — to take a 9-4 lead heading to the fifth.
But after being shut down in the second, third and fourth innings by Hoquiam starter Carron Blood, Monte responded with six runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Bulldogs took a 13-9 lead on a sacrifice fly from Paige Lisherness, an RBI double by Madi Campbell and a run-scoring single from Jessica Stanfield.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Hoquiam scored four runs, tying the game at 13-all on Hailey Lawrence’s two-run home run to right field.
Monte responded in the seventh with three runs on a two-run single from Lisherness, who later scored on an error to give Monte a 16-13 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Blood and Charli Sampson-Eastman reached on a single and walk, respectively, bringing the tying run to the plate in Alyssa Perry.
Perry hit a hard ground ball to Lisherness at shortstop and reached on an error, but Blood was thrown out at home on the play for the first out of the inning.
Kaliyah Bailey grounded out to advance Sampson-Eastman and Perry to third and second, respectively.
But Montesano pitcher Riley Timmons got a fly out to right fielder Reghann Fairbairn to end the threat, and Hoquiam’s chances of a dramatic comeback victory.
Lisherness had a monster game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and a whopping nine RBI for the Bulldogs.
Jessica Stanfield (4-4, 2B, 3B, R, 2RBI) and younger sister Mikayla Stanfield (2-3, 2R, RBI) combined to go 6-for-7 in the game with Cassadie Golding (2-4, 2R) also having a multi-hit game for the Bulldogs.
Faith Prosch was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead Hoquiam.
Lawrence (2-3, 2B, 2R-HR, 3R, 4RBI), Blood (3-4, 2B, 3RBI) and Ella Folkers (2-3, 2R, RBI) also had multiple hits for the Grizzlies.
Monte’s Riley Timmons picked up the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, five walks and a strikeout in four innings of relief.

Montesano’s Jessica Stanfield broke a school record for home runs in a season as the Bulldogs defeated the Hoquiam Grizzlies 12-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday in Hoquiam.
Leading 3-0 in the top of the second inning, Montesano scored eight runs in the third, highlighted by Stanfield’s two-run 230 foot bomb over the center field fence, giving Monte a 6-0 lead at the time and breaking a school record for home runs in a season in the process.
Stanfield’s blast was her ninth of the season, breaking a record she held with her older sister and Central Washington University player Samantha Stanfield (2016) and former Montesano state champion Aubree Pocklington (2009).
Stanfield (2-3, 2R-HR, 2R, 2RBI) was joined by Cassadie Golding (2-3, 2B, R, RBI), Mikayla Stanfield (2-3, 2R, RBI), Madi Campbell (2-2, R, 2RBI) and pitcher Riley Timmons (2-3, R, 3 RBI) as Bulldogs with multi-hit games.
Timmons earned her second victory of the day, allowing no runs and just one hit in a three-inning, 10-run rule victory.

Tenino 8, Elma 4
A big first inning spelled doom for a young Elma team as the Eagles dropped the first game of a doubleheader 8-4 to Tenino on Friday in Tenino.
Tenino got to Elma starter Aaleigha Weld for five runs in the first that included a three-run home run by Cassie Cannon.
Elma (1-12, 1-10 1A Evergreen) scored two in the second on an RBI double from Jalyn Whipple, who later scored on an error and cut the lead to 5-3 on a Janessa Sample home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
Elma pitcher Madison Monroe, who entered the game in the first inning, held Tenino scoreless through five innings as the Eagles clawed their way back into the game.
But the Beavers (8-7, 7-6) got to Monroe for three insurance runs in the seventh as Tenino extended its lead to 8-3.
Elma scratched across a run on a Sample sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh but got no closer in an 8-4 loss.
Elma made the most of its four hits in the ballgame off Tenino pitcher Emily Baxter, with Sample (1-4, HR, R, 2RBI), Whipple (2-3, 2 2B, R, RBI) and Monroe (1-3, R) leading the way for the Eagles.
Weld took the loss, allowing three earned runs on Cannon’s homer in the first before giving way to Monroe (7IP, 5ER, 8H, 7K, 2BB).
Baxter picked up the win, allowing two earned runs with 10 strikeouts and a walk in seven innings pitched.

Similar to what the Eagles dealt with in the first game, Tenino scored early and scored late to down Elma 7-2 in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday in Elma.
Tenino scored three runs in the first on RBI doubles from Emily Baxter and Courtney Backman to put Elma in an early hole for the second straight game.
Elma responded with a run in the second when Aaleigha Weld scored on an error and a run in the third when Brooklyne Swarts singled to score Emmie Spencer and cut Tenino’s lead to 3-2.
Eagles starter Delayne Hanson held the Beavers scoreless after the first until she ran into trouble in the seventh inning. Tenino scored four runs in the seventh on back-to-back tw0-out RBI singles by Alivia Hunter and Abby Severse to earn the 7-2 victory.
Sample (2-4, 2B,), Swarts (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Jalyn Whipple (2-3) had multi-hit games for an Elma offense that had nine hits in the game.
Baxter picked up her second win of the day, holding Elma to two runs (none earned) on nine hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in a seven-inning complete-game performance.
Hanson took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits with six walks and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
