GHC wrestlers knock off BYU, perform well in homestand

Grays Harbor College scored a big NCWA dual meet win on Friday night and concluded a two-day homestand with a series of exhibition matches with the University of Washington on Saturday morning at the GHC Gym.

On Friday, the Chokers, ranked ninth nationally in the NCWA Coaches Poll, knocked off the 15th-ranked Cougars, 39-16, at the Bishop Center.

GHC picked up four forfeits from BYU in the meet and took home three match wins, including two pins — Josh Pine, at 165 pounds, over Joel Temple at 1:10 and Denzell Morrow (197) over Tanner Risk.

“We wrestled a short-manned BYU squad,” GHC men’s head coach Phil Pine said. “They suffered injuries to three starters last week and ended up forfeiting four weights to us. We both have nationally ranked wrestlers on our teams and I would have liked to have seen their full lineup. We were pretty evenly matched for the contested matches.”

On Saturday, the Chokers hosted the Huskies, who also took on the Cougars, in a series of exibition matches. Highline College also sent wrestlers on Saturday to participate in the matches.

Andres Smiley faced BYU’s Joel Temple on Saturday and scored a major decision, 17-4, in the 157-pound division. Josh Pine scored a pinfall on Saturday over Washington’s Gavin Eaglin. Also, Joe Fricione, at 184 pounds, won twice on Saturday.

The Chokers also suffered an injury when Hoquiam grad Gary Aube, at 197, suffered a knee injury late in his match against Edgars Plorinsh, of Washington.

GHC assistant coach Easton Hargrave, helping the GHC women’s wrestling team at the Clan International tournament in Burnaby, B.C., Canada, won the 86-kilogram division in the Clansmen International freestyle tournament.

At the Clan International, GHC’s women performed well. Here are their results:

Cynthia Ramirez (46kg, 2nd), Aileen Cruz (46kg, 5th), Amanda Gilliam (55kg, 4th), Marizza Biruetta (58kg, 1st), Chloe Spencer (60kg, 2nd), Kacie Moorehouse (75kg, 5th).

On Jan. 6—7, GHC will head up to Bremerton for the Gut Check Open before hosting Warner Pacific on Jan. 11.
