Girls Basketball Roundup: Willapa Valley downs Pe Ell behind Huber’s 32 points

Also: Raymond loses close game to Ilwaco; South Bend, Ocosta drop league games

Willapa Valley got a big game from senior Grace Huber in a 61-34 victory over Pe Ell on Friday at Pe Ell High School.

Willapa Valley (3-1 overall, 2-0 1B Columbia Valley) led 32-24 at the half and used a strong defensive effort in the second half to secure the victory, holding the Trojans (2-2, 1-1) to 10 points over the final 16 minutes of the game.

Huber scored 32 points on 12-of-20 (60%) shooting and grabbed 15 rebounds in the victory.

Vikings senior Brooklyn Patrick had a double-double with six points, 12 assists and 10 steals.

Vikings freshman Lauren Matlock added nine points while Gaby Quezada had four points and 10 rebounds for Willapa Valley, which hit 24-of-67 (36%) shots from the field, grabbed 37 rebounds and committed 10 turnovers as a team.

Willapa Valley held Pe Ell’s high-scoring standout Charlie Carper to 12 points, all in the first half.

“We kind of clamped down on them,” Vikings head coach John Peterson said. “It’s always tough to play here. It was a struggle, but once we got going, we were fine.”

Willapa Valley takes on South Bend at 5:45 p.m. Monday in South Bend.

Forks 74, South Bend 25

South Bend showed some improvement but was little match for a powerful Forks team in a 74-25 loss on Friday in South Bend.

Forks (2-1, 2-0 2B Pacific) was led by two of the league’s top scorers in Keira Johnson and Kyra Neel, with 32 and 16 points, respectively.

South Bend (0-2, 0-2) trailed 20-5 after one quarter but played a competitive second period, being outscored by the Spartans 16-13 in the frame.

Forks put the game away with a dominant 29-7 third quarter.

Avalynn Stigall and Raydynn Morley led South Bend with seven points apiece.

“Forks played well tonight,” South Bend head coach Jon Schray said. “I was pleased with the little improvements we made as a team. We were definitely better tonight than we were two days ago and that is where we are at as a team right now. Each day we need to just be a little better and we will reach our potential.”

South Bend hosts Willapa Valley at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Ilwaco 58, Raymond 56

Missed opportunities hurt Raymond in a 58-56 loss to Ilwaco on Friday at Ilwaco High School.

Tied 27-27 at the half, Raymond (3-2, 2-1 2B Pacific) went up by as much as 12 points late in the third quarter before a loss of intensity and mental focus allowed Ilwaco (4-0, 2-0) to climb back into the game.

Trailing by one with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Raymond missed an opportunity to take the lead with two missed free throws followed by a missed 1-and-1 that would have gave the Seagulls the lead with 18 seconds left.

Ilwaco converted two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to go up 58-56.

Raymond missed an open three at the buzzer that would have won the game.

Seagulls sophomore Karsyn Freeman scored a game-high 25 points in the loss.

Kyndal Koski had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals for Raymond.

“A great high-school game between two competitive teams,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “Proud of the kids’ resiliency and competitive spirit, but the first two minutes and last one minute of the game cost us. Our young kids will be better for being in a game like this on the road versus a physical club like Ilwaco.”

Raymond hosts Chief Leschi at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Chief Leschi 72, Ocosta 22

Ocosta fell behind early and never recovered in a 72-22 loss to Chief Leschi on Friday in Puyallup.

The Wildcats (1-2, 1-2 2B Pacific) fell behind 30-5 in the first quarter and trailed 63-20 at the end of the third.

Ocosta’s Alexandria Matthews had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Miki Ness added six points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals for Ocosta, which shot 9-of-29 (31%) shooting and had 28 turnovers in the contest.

Ocosta hosts North Beach at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
