GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Montesano 40, Forks 23
Montesano overcame a slow start to dominate Forks 40-23 on Friday at Montesano High School.
Down 4-0 early in the game, Montesano (3-3 overall) eventually tied the game at 6-6 with three minutes left in the first quarter and took off from there, ending the frame on a 10-0 run to seize control of the contest.
The Bulldogs held Forks (2-5) to less than double digits in every quarter of the game and had amassed a 16-point lead by the end of the third quarter.
According to Bulldogs head coach Mark Mansfield, no matter what defense his team used on Friday, it worked.
“The defense really stepped up tonight,” said Mansfield, whose team allowed two points in the fourth quarter and forced 36 Spartans turnovers in the game. “We made things really difficult for them with our defense. We were flying around and disrupting things. We weren’t giving them good looks in general.”
Standout junior forward Jillie Dalan led the way for Monte, scoring 22 points while snatching nine rebounds and grabbing six steals.
Sophomore guard Tieander Olson added six points, nine rebounds and three assists while senior Hazel Jones added six points for the Bulldogs.
Monte junior Regan Wintrip tied with Dalan for the team lead in steals with six.
The Bulldogs shot 13 of 53 from the field (24.5%), went 13 for 20 from the free-throw line and had 22 turnovers in the game.
Monte is scheduled to play at Mossyrock at 7 p.m. on Monday.
Forks 6 6 9 2 – 23
Montesano 16 9 10 5 – 40
Scoring: Montesano – Dalan 22, Olson 6, Jones 6, Forster 2, Blancas 2, Wintrip 2.

Raymond-South Bend 58, Mossyrock 54
Raymond-South Bend climbed all the way back from a double-digit deficit to beat Mossyrock 58-54 in overtime on Friday at Mossyrock High School.
The Ravens (4-2) “couldn’t figure out how to get off the bus,” according to RSB head coach Jason Koski as they trailed 19-5 after one quarter of play.
But a switch in defenses “gave us some confidence” and led to RSB outscoring the Vikings (5-3) 19-12 in the second quarter, thanks in large part to the performances of guard Megan Kongbouakhay and forward Kassie Koski, who combined to score 16 points in the frame.
It would take much of the second half for RSB to erase a seven-point halftime deficit when junior Ava Baugher hit a short runner with 20 seconds to play to tie the game at 54-all.
The game went to overtime and continued to be a nail-biter until sophomore Avalyn Stigall drilled a three with 35 seconds on the clock, putting the Ravens up 57-54.
The Ravens went 3 of 4 from the foul line down the stretch, with Kongbouakhay converting a key make with 15 seconds left to go up 58-54.
RSB got a stop on the defensive end to secure the victory.
Koski had a huge game for the Ravens. The junior star scored 27 points on 10-of-25 shooting (40%) and had a team-high six steals.
Stigall had 12 points and eight rebounds while Baugher had a double-double with 10 points and a team-best 15 rebounds for RSB.
The Ravens went 21 of 58 from the field (36%) – including 8 of 26 from 3-point range (31%) – and hit 8-of-19 free throws in the game (42%).
RSB had 42 rebounds – 15 on the offensive end – and committed 19 turnovers while recording 15 steals and 11 assists as a team.
The Ravens play at Onalaska at 7 p.m. on Monday.
RSB 5 19 13 17 4 – 58
Mossyrock 19 12 12 11 0 – 54
Scoring: RSB – Koski 27, Stigall 12, Baugher 10, Konbouakhay 7, Pine-Isaksen 2. Mossyrock – Cournyer 18, Rashoff 16, Barrows 7, Ch. Shultz 7, T. Schwartz 2, Ca. Shultz 2, B. Schwartz 2.
