GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Montesano 54, Aberdeen 33
Montesano upset Aberdeen 54-33 in the title game of the Montesano Winter Classic on Friday at Montesano High School.
The Bulldogs (3-6 overall) got 27 points from sophomore post Jillie Dalan to defeat the Bobcats (5-4) just four days after falling to Aberdeen 35-34 on Monday, Dec. 18.
Monte hit 23-of-46 shots from the floor (50%) and held Aberdeen leading scorers Annie Troeh (18 ppg) and Bentley Brown (12 ppg) to nine points total.
“Tonight, our defense was the best its been all season. We came out with a lot of defensive intensity. We flew around the court.” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We really focused on not allowing them to get good looking threes and they only had one three on the night.”
Dalan added eight rebounds and three steals to her stat line while Lex Stanfield (10 points, 4 steals) and Tieander Olson (8 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) also had solid all-around floor games for the Bulldogs.
“As a team, we just moved the ball much better and I think our defense really fueled our offense,” Mansfield said. “It was really a nice step forward for us. … It was a nice way to go into the Christmas break with two really solid wins for us.”
“We didn’t really execute our game plan,” Aberdeen head coach Curtis Eccles said. “We knew after we beat them on Monday that Dalan was the one we needed to shut down and I emphasized that all week. … We had a game plan of manning her and denying her the ball and it just didn’t work. She did a great job of getting open and we tried a variety of girls to deny her the ball, and she was able to score 27 points.”
