“Maddie obviously had a great game,” Aberdeen head coach Rachel Wenzel said. “She anticipates on defense so well and runs the floor so fast. She is a force to be reckoned with in this league.”

“This year we have the other pieces, especially on defense, to attack fast and get her the ball,” she said. “I’m very proud of the whole team’s effort.”

Hoquiam (2-2) led 13-6 after one quarter but after saw Willapa Valley (2-1) climb back into the game by halftime as the Grizzlies managed just five points in the second quarter, leading 18-14 at the half.
Enter Kennedy, who had just two points in the first half but erupted after halftime.
The senior center had 14 of her game-high 22 points in the third quarter — at one point hitting eight straight shots — as Hoquiam turned a four-point halftime lead into a commanding 39-23 advantage entering the fourth period.
“A (Willapa Valley head coach) John Peterson team is always going to be disciplined and tough. They took us out of our flow. We missed some easy ones early and were a little deflated.” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “In the first half, (Kennedy) was in position, it just wasn’t dropping. In the second half, they were dropping. It’s infectious, as soon as you hit one, they start dropping.”
Kennedy also had a monster game on the boards with a career-high 31 rebounds — 18 on the offensive glass — as the Grizzlies had 52 rebounds as a team.
Senior guard Ella Folkers added 11 points and five steals while senior point guard Graci Bonney-Spradlin added nine points and six steals for Hoquiam, which had 17 steals as a team.
“When we went into the locker room, we just talked about how we needed to go back to basics,” Kennedy said of the second-half turnaround. “We were hitting our shots, boxing out and keeping the middle open.”
Hoquiam went 22-for-76 (29%) from the field, including 4-of-19 (21%) from the 3-point line.
Willapa Valley was led by freshman guard Lauren Matlock, who scored 12 points in the loss.
Vikings leading-scorer Grace Huber scored eight points in limited minutes do to foul trouble.
Willapa Valley also had 27 turnovers in the game.
Both were issues Peterson addressed after the loss.
“We got in foul trouble and against a team like that, if you turn it over 30 times, you are not going to win,” he said. “It’s really early. I really like my team. The reason we schedule a game like this is I would rather play up a level or two. You might get beat soundly and we did tonight.”
Peterson added he was proud of the way his team played with Huber on the bench for most of the contest.
“I thought the first half, we hung, especially without Grace,” he said. “But we had way too many turnovers. … It’s just basketball and that happens sometimes. I’m disapointed we lost, but I’m not disapointed in the effort at all.”
The mutual respect between the two veteran coaches was evident in the post-game interviews.
“Chad does a good job,” Peterson said. “That is the other reason we play this game is that he and I have been friends for a long time. I have a lot of respect for him. We’re both pretty old-school and believe in the fundamentals.”
Willapa Valley plays at Pe Ell at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
