GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Raymond-South Bend 48, Hoquiam 41
Raymond-South Bend jumped out to a big lead then held off a Hoquiam comeback for a 48-41 victory in the Raymond New Year’s Tournament on Saturday at South Bend High School.
The Ravens (6-3 overall) lead by 14 points after Hoquiam (5-4) posted a scoreless first quarter.
The Grizzlies offense woke up in the second quarter to chip eight points off the RSB lead and trail 21-15 at the half.
But the Ravens hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter – one each by Berklee Morley, Avalyn Stigall and Kassie Koski – to take a 37-27 at the end of the third.
In the final period, the Ravens held off Hoquiam, thanks in large part to eight points by forward Ava Baugher, to preserve the win.
Koski led all scorers with 20 points – five on 3-pointers – and 12 by Stigall via four threes.
The Ravens made 10 threes as a team in the game.
Ava Baugher added six rebounds to go along with her eight points for RSB.
“Kids had a great start, which has been an issue before the last two games,” Ravens head coach Jason Koski said. “But boy did we kill our momentum with unnecessary fouling.”
RSB had 19 personal fouls – four each by Morley, post Ava Pine-Isaksen and point guard Megan Kongbouakhay – leading Coach Koski to go deep into his bench.
“It was great to see Avalyn and Kassie hit some deep threes and kudos to the bench play of guards Berklee Morley and eighth graders Maddi San and Ryann Mark,” he said.
Hoquiam was led by post players Sydney Gordon and Aaliyah Kennedy with 10 points each.
Coach Koski said the play of Ravens forward Ava Pine was key to limiting Hoquiam’s advantage in the paint.
“I can’t say enough how well Ava Pine played defensively in the post versus two very solid post kids in Gordon and Kennedy,” he said. “To hold them to 10 points apiece is an incredible accomplishment.”
Hoquiam outrebounded RSB 33-23, with Kennedy leading the way with 14 boards.
RSB faces Willapa Valley at 7 p.m. on Monday in South Bend.
Hoquiam will take on Kalama at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Kalama High School.
Hoquiam 0 15 12 14 – 41
RSB 14 7 16 11 – 48
Scoring: Hoquiam – Gordon 10, Kennedy 10, K. Brodhead 9, LaBounty 4, Stewart 4, Stankavich 2, Standstipher 2. RSB – Koski 20, Stigall 12, Baugher 8, Morley 3, San 2, Pine-Isaksen 2, Kongbouakhay 1.

Montesano 53, Kelso 44
Montesano had four players score in double figures en route to a 53-44 win over Kelso on Saturday at the Adna Holiday Tournament at Adna High School.
The Bulldogs (5-4) led 17-8 after one quarter but allowed the 3A-class Hilanders (3-5) back in the game by scoring four points in the second period to trail 22-21 at the break.
“We got off to a pretty good start, but then kind of went flat in the second,” said Monte head coach Mark Mansfield, whose team did not score a field goal in the second quarter. “We kind of refocused, came out in the second half and scored on our first few possessions and created some havoc for them, defensively.”
The Bulldogs held Kelso to 10 points in the third quarter and took a 40-32 lead into the final eight minutes of play.
Kelso trimmed Monte’s advantage to as little as four points in the final quarter, but the Bulldogs hit free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Monte went 14 of 59 from the field (23.7%), but won the game at the foul line, converting 23-of-32 free throws (71.9%).
“I don’t recall us ever shooting that well with that many free throws,” Mansfield said.
Forwards Ava Schrader (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Jillie Dalan (10 pts., 14 reb.) each had double-doubles to lead the Bulldogs.
Point guard Tieander Olson had 11 points and six rebounds despite being in foul trouble while sophomore Makena Blancas had 10 points and hit eight consecutive free throws in the game, going 8 of 10 from the line.
Monte outrebounded Kelso 44-27 as a team.
“Ava had a really solid game tonight and Makena getting 10 (points) was a really big boost,” Mansfield said. “In the second half, we really played much better. Defensively, we really flew around and made it difficult for them and we executed better offensively. It was a really good win.”
Monte opens 1A Evergreen League play against Tenino at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday in Montesano.
Montesano 17 4 19 13 – 53
Kelso 8 14 10 12 – 44
Scoring: Montesano – Schrader 16, Olson 11, Dalan 10, Blancas 10, Forster 2, Jones 2, Perry 2. Kelso – Ruhland 14.
