Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Montesano each picked up victories as we take a look at Tuesday’s girls prep soccer action on the Harbor.
GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Montesano 6, Evergreen (Vancouver) 1
Throughout the first half, Montesano struggled to cash in on a multitude of scoring chances.
That changed in the second half, and dramatically so.
Montesano scored five goals after halftime to secure a 6-1 victory over 3A class Evergreen (Vancouver) on Tuesday at Montesano High School.
The Bulldogs (4-1-1 overall) led 1-0 after senior midfielder Bethanie Henderson ripped a shot from 25-yards out for a goal in the 21st minute, but multiple Monte chances to extend the lead were off the mark as the contest remained a one-goal game heading into halftime.
“Our tempo tonight was good. I wish that it would’ve paid off as for as goals in the first half,” Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We just couldn’t capitalize on on all the possession and all the tempo.”
Montesano made the adjustments at the break, leading to a goal in the 48th minute by reigning league MVP Mikayla Stanfield and – after a Plainsman goal four minutes later – four unanswered goals to hand Evergreen (4-1-1) its first loss of the season.
Sanchez said the difference in the second half came down to shot selection.
“You’ve got to chose between placement or power,” he said. “They made the adjustments in the second half and were able to put the ball away because they were picking their spots and not just blasting the ball.”
Stanfield finished with a pair of goals – including a late penalty kick – and an assist while Henderson and freshman forward Jaelyn Butterfield scored two goals apiece for the Bulldogs.
Sanchez said he was pleased with how his team played with energy, possession and communication, praising defenders Carsyn Wintrip and Dekotah Parks for their ability to build plays from the back line.
“We had a lot of uses of combination plays between the girls. The development was really good from the backs,” he said. “Carsyn and Dekotah did a great job connecting to the midfield and up to our attacking third. These are things we’ve been working on and they did a really good job of that.”
Next up for Monte is a 1A Evergreen League opener against Tenino at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in Montesano.

Aberdeen 4, Black Hills 0
Aberdeen picked up its first win of the season and it couldn’t have come at a better time, knocking off Black Hills 4-0 on Tuesday in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats (1-3, 1-1 2A Evergreen) got on the board when senior forward Annie Troeh’s corner kick bounced off a Wolves defender and into the net for a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game.
Aberdeen doubled its lead when a Troeh shot hit the crossbar and was followed by Cats forward Abby Mainio, who buried the rebound into the netting in the 28th minute.
After halftime, the Bobcats continued to dominate, cashing in on a give-and-go play between Mainio and junior midfielder Delaney Shoemaker, with Shoemaker scoring for a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute.
Eight minutes later, Troeh ran down a through pass from freshman midfielder Nataly Barragan and beat the Wolves keeper 1-on-1 for her second goal of the game.
After opening the season with three straight shutout losses, Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said better passing, aggressive on-ball challenges and marking up on defense contributed to the victory.
“The girls are working hard every day to improve and it showed in tonight’s performance,” he said. “We have a lot of things to work on, but it was nice to score a few goals and get our first win of the season.”
Jaylynn Phimmasone and Mainio shared goal keeping duties to earn the clean sheet for the Bobcats with senior midfielder Zoe Troeh and senior defender Esmerelda Vega earning praise from Fleming for their play.
Aberdeen’s JV team won 2-1 on Tuesday, with Aliyah Burkett and Karla Guzman scoring for the Cats. Joie Mayberry and goal keeper Ella Daniels were commended by Aberdeen assistant coach Lindsey Scott for their performances.
The Bobcats face Rochester in another league matchup set for 7 p.m. on Thursday at Rochester High School.

Hoquiam 5, Ilwaco 0
One day after suffering a blowout loss, Hoquiam found its game, picking up its first win of the season 5-0 over Ilwaco on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.
The Grizzlies (1-2) were led by Jemima Perez, who scored a hat trick, and Chloey Dietrick’s two goals in the victory.
Dietrick broke a scoreless tie by following her own shot and scoring off a rebound in the 11th minute.
In the second half, Dietrick one-timed a Perez cross for a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute.
Dietrick returned the favor with a through pass to Perez for a goal in the 53rd minute.
Five minutes later, Perez roofed a shot from 40 yards away for a 4-0 lead.
Perez then scored after the ball bounced off the oncoming Ilwaco keeper and fell to the foot of Perez, who placed the ball into the net in the 72nd minute, completing the hat trick in her first game back from injury.
“We came out like we wanted to be there and wanted to win,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “Everybody’s mindset was that we wanted to play.”
The victory was a stark contrast to Monday’s game, a 5-0 loss to Rochester in which Schmid said her team “wasn’t in the game.”
Hoquiam will look to continue its solid play with a game at Forks at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
