Grays Harbor Chokers pick up victory in first weekend of season

GHC beats Multnomah University JV 96-58 on Sunday

The Grays Harbor College men’s basketball team picked up a victory in the opening weekend of the season, defeating Multnomah University’s junior varsity team 96-58 on Sunday in Ontario, Oregon.

After starting off the season 0-2 with losses to Southwest Oregon (103-73) and Treasure Valley (83-63) on Friday and Saturday, respectively, the Chokers (1-2 overall) rebounded to defeat the NAIA school’s JV squad.

GHC led 43-34 at the half and were led by Kane Wood’s 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting and Prashant Chouhan, who had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Five different Chokers scored in double digits, with starters Josh Adamsel Jr. (15 points), Lok Kulang (14 pts.) and reserve Will Casebolt (13 pts., 4-8 3FG) also scoring at least 10 points in the rout.

“We went up against two of the top NWAC teams in our first two games of the weekend and came together to play a great game on Sunday and finish the weekend with a win,” GHC head coach Blake Cleveringa said. “It’s a good start to the season and I’m excited to see where we go from here.”

GHC shot 48.8% from the field on 38-of-80 shooting and outrebounded Multnomah JV 55-27, including 18 offensive rebounds, leading to a 28-6 advantage in second-chance points.

The Chokers outscored Multnomah JV 42-16 in the paint and had 33 points from the bench to just five for Multnomah JV.

GHC held as much as a 38-point lead in the first minute of the second half.

“We have a lot of new faces this year, but the returners have done a great job in helping the younger guys get acclimated to our program,” Cleveringa said. “We’re excited about the culture we are creating, and we’re looking forward to what the rest of this season holds.”

GHC faces Portland at 3 p.m. on Saturday at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.
