LA CONNER — Raymond couldn’t capitalize on opportunities as the Seagulls season came to an end with a 33-10 loss to La Conner in a 2B state playoff game at La Conner on Saturday.
The Braves scored on their first offensive play to grab the lead for good. Raymond responded by driving and scoring a field goal, but the Gulls never fully recovered.
“Offensively, we had many opportunities,” Raymond coach Luke Abbott said. “We’d be moving the ball and then get a penalty or we’d cough up the ball and put ourselves in more difficult situations than we should have been in. Defensively, they threw almost everything at us. We had a plan for everything they did, but they were very physical on the interior. We weren’t strong enough to stop their plan.”
La Conner stretched the lead out to 21-3 at halftime. The Braves took the second-half kickoff and drove for a score to go up 27-3.
Raymond marched the ball to answer and pull back within 17. It looked as if the Gulls could pull back within striking distance when Patrick Edwards recovered a fumble moments later, but Raymond turned the ball over on downs and couldn’t get any more momentum the rest of the way.
“When I look at the score, I don’t think the score depicts the game that everyone that was there saw,” Abbott said. “I was very proud of our guys with the way we continued to fight and I don’t think we ever gave up. If we finish some drives it is a lot closer football game.”
The Seagulls finish the season with a 5-5 record. While Abbott said he is excited for the future, as the Gulls return eight starters on both sides of the ball next season, Raymond will graduate three key players in Kason Koski, Jace Duckworth and Luke Hamilton.
“All three of those kids are fantastic kids, not just as athletes, but as people,” Abbott said. “They’ve been impact players for us since they were freshman so it is going to be tough to see those guys go.”
Duckworth finished with almost 140 yards rushing against La Conner, while Koski threw for around 130 yards against the Braves.
