GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Ocosta 5, Winlock 1

In a preview of what could likely be a first-round district matchup, Ocosta defeated Winlock 5-1 on Monday in Westport.

Ocosta (10-4-1, 5-4 2B Central) scored just 30 seconds into the game when midfielder Brizeyda Ayala Rios gained control of the ball and sent a well-placed pass to senior standout Kylee Denny, who scored for a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats’ would take a 2-0 lead into halftime when Kat Nersten scored off a Scarlett Nelson pass in the 25th minute.

Ocosta head coach Rissy Ness felt her team left points on the field after peppering the Cardinals goal with 27 shots in the first half.

“At half, my pep talk to the girls was simply just to be more productive with the shots we take and more intentional with the ball at our feet,” she said. “My favorite part in coaching these girls is when they take the challenge and implements the plan of action. We had a much better percentage of completed passes to one another and had more quality shots in the second half.”

Ocosta’s increased offensive efficiency led to three goals in the second half, one each by Nersten, Nelson and Denny to earn the 5-1 victory.

With the win, Ocosta sits in fifth place in the 2B Central League and will close out the regular season against Montesano’s JV squad at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
