Local Roundup: Montesano extends win streak to nine with win over Elma

Montesano extended its winning streak to nine games with a 9-6 victory over Elma on Thursday in Elma.

The Bulldogs (15-1 overall, 9-0 1A Evergreen) took a 1-0 lead on Cam Taylor’s RBI single to score Bode Poler in the top of the first.

Elma (8-6, 4-4) responded when Carter Studer drove in Gibson Cain – on board after a Monte error – with a double to right to tie the game at 1-all.

Montesano took control of the game in the second inning, scoring four runs to lead 5-1. With one on and one out, Poler drove in Jaxson Wilson with a double and came around to score – along with Dalton Harris – on a Kaleb Ames double to left. After a Josh Wills fly out advanced Ames to third, John Kling drove in Ames with a base hit to right field.

The Bulldogs made it an 8-1 game with three runs in the top of the fifth, cashing in on three walks when Poler doubled to drive in two runs followed by an RBI fielder’s choice ground out from Ames.

The Eagles climbed back in the game with three runs – all with two outs – in the bottom half of the fifth. With Ethan Camus and Grant Vessey aboard with singles, Eastin Wright doubled to drive in both runners to pull Elma closer at 8-3. Gibson Cain followed with a single to left to score Wright and make it an 8-4 ballgame.

Monte added an insurance run with Ames driving in his fourth run of the game when he singled in Poler with a two-out knock.

Elma rallied in the bottom of the seventh when Vessey drove in Kyren Hackney with a single followed later in the frame by a Studer sacrifice fly to make it a 9-6 game.

With the tying run at the plate and two outs, Monte reliever Skylar Bove struck out Brody Palmer on a dropped third strike to pick up the save and end the game, giving Monte its second win over Elma this week.

Cam Taylor picked up the win for the Bulldogs, allowing five runs – three earned – on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Cameron Green took the loss for Elma, allowing five earned runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 2 2-3 innings of work.

Poler continued his red-hot hitting, going 4-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBI.

Ames added two hits – including a double – and drove in four runs for Monte.

Vessey was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI while Cain had two hits for the Eagles.

The two teams will square off again at 4 p.m. Friday at Vessey Field in Montesano.

Aberdeen wins Sibley Scramble

Aberdeen took home the team title at the Sibley Scramble on Monday at the Alderbrook Golf Course in Union.

Led by the overall low score of 68 from the duo of Britt Rajcich and Kaitlyn McCracken, Aberdeen finished with 154 strokes, one shot better than W.F. West and three ahead of third-place Elma.

The Eagles were led by Olivia and Aubrey Moore, who paired up to shoot a 69, with Olivia also winning the closest-to-pin competition on the 12th hole and Aubrey claiming the longest drive title on the 15th hole.

Montesano placed fourth with a score of 164, led by the pairing of Hailey Blancas and Maggie Kupka (78).
