BOYS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 3, Prairie 1

Aberdeen remained undefeated on the season by scoring three unanswered goals for a 3-1 victory over 3A Prairie on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (9-0) fell behind for the first time this season after a penalty kick was converted with less than a minute to go in the first half.

Aberdeen shook off the Spring Break-rust in the second half, winning more 50-50 balls and connecting on a higher percentage of passes to control the pitch against Prairie (5-2).

With 10 minutes left in the match, Aberdeen found the equalizing goal when a long drive from keeper Antonio Granados found the head of senior midfielder Gilberto Lopez, who sent the ball toward a sprinting Elmer Torres.

Torres beat a Prairie defender and the goal keeper to knot the game up at 1-1.

Edwin Quintana nearly gave the Cats the lead shortly thereafter when he caught the Prairie goal keeper out of the 18-yard box and sent a long shot from 50 yards out, missing the goal by approximately two feet.

Aberdeen would get the go-ahead goal when senior winger Colby Mendoza sent the ball to sophomore forward Evan Cone, who flicked the ball over the oncoming Prairie keeper in the 77th minute.

In stoppage time, Bobcats senior forward Carlos Mendoza crossed the ball to the head of Torres for a 3-1 score.

“It was really great seeing our boys handle some real adversity and come back to dominate the end of the game,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Terrific team effort from defense to the front line with lots of hustle from the entire squad. Solid win against a pretty good team.”

Aberdeen’s JV team won 6-0 on Tuesday, with Edgar Ceja, Tyson Dunlap, Jazir Arenal, Trino Villar, Spencer Hill and Angel Mendez scoring for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen resumes league play with a key game against W.F. West at 7 p.m. Friday in Chehalis.
