Pine wins second wrestling world championship

Former Elma High School great and current Grays Harbor College head wrestling coach Kevin Pine won his second world title after placing first in the 88kg freestyle competition at the 2022 Veteran World Championships this month in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Competing for the United States in the international competition, Pine defeated Mongolia’s Munkhchuluun Lochin 10-0 to claim a gold medal in the Masters Division D (51-55 years old) class on Oct. 5, earning Pine his second career world championship.

Pine wasn’t done as he competed in the 88kg Greco-Roman competition three days later.

Pine defeated Italy’s Alessandro Zappala via fall at 0:23 followed by a 9-0 victory over Dimitrios Chalkias (Greece) to advance to the Division D semifinals.

In the semis, Pine was bested by Poland’s Jerzy Sekura 6-1 and earned a bronze medal after a forfeiture win over France’s Karim Hammiche.

Pine helped Team USA to 37 medals overall at the competition, which ran from Oct. 4-9.
