Locals compete at The Big Hurt endurance race

Motley Tu Tu team places second, Nelson third in men’s open competition of 55-mile Ironman style race

Several local endurance athletes competed at The Big Hurt Adventure Relay on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Port Angeles.

A group of local athletes representing La Vogue Cycle in Hoquiam placed second overall in the Open Team competition.

The team of Martin Cech, (Aberdeen High School cross country coach) Dennis Nelson, Bill Wallace and Toby Nelson – team name Motley Tu Tu – placed second out of 40 teams competing in the four-stage race.

The race consisted of a 15 mile mountain bike ride, a 2.6 mile kayak race, a 30 mile road bike race and a 10K run.

Motley Tu Tu finished with a time of 4:12:02, with split times of 1:17:55 (mountain bike), 33:28 (kayak), 1:37:10 (road bike) and 43:29 (run).

Team CRTC placed first with a time of 4:10:32.

Local team The Friday Crowd, which included Aberdeen School Board member Jessica Jurasin, her husband Tyler and their son Nolan, placed 11th overall with a time of 4:30:37.

Twin Harbors resident Henry Nelson placed third overall in the men’s Iron Open race, completing all four legs in 3:55:59.

La Vogue Cycle’s Buck Giles placed seventh with a time of 4:33:21.

Over 200 endurance runners competed on the 55-mile Big Hurt course.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, five local grade-schoolers competed in The Little Hurt, which consisted of a machine row, a bike ride and a run, with distances varying based on age.

Local competitors were Robbie Cech (third grade), Jack Nelson (sixth grade), Liam Cech (sixth grade), Oliver Cech (eighth grade) and Adalyn Friberg (eighth grade).
