Grays Harbor College men’s golf coach Ann Swanson was recently honored by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association, being recognized with an Honor Award.

Swanson, who has been a PNGA director since 2015 and was named to the PNGA Hall of Fame in 2007, received the honor in “appreciation for her dedication and thoughtful leadership as PNGA Director,” according to the organization.

“It is always a rewarding experience to receive recognition for one’s efforts,” said Swanson, according to ghcathletics.com. “My journey thru golf has garnered unexpected and treasured experiences. None more satisfying then what I am currently doing: coaching the GHC Men’s team where my golf all begin and helping young people learn more about themselves and the greater things the game of golf can teach. Little did I know those first swings on a golf course would bring so many amazing people and experiences into my life. It has been a terrific education and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to compete in this game. I never dreamed my life would be so defined by golf.”

COLLEGE WRESTLING

GHC’s Tongi honored

After going 7-0 at the Junior College Women’s National Championship, Grays Harbor College wrestler Jennifer Tongi was named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week for May 18 — a first for any GHC wrestler.

“That’s a cool deal,” GHC head coach Kevin Pine said of Tongi’s achievement, which is unique in that USA Wrestling only picks one wrestler — across all levels, disciplines and genders — as the Athlete of the Week.

Tongi won the individual championship in the 155-pound weight class then went on to pick up two pinfall victories in the dual competition, earning her the tournament’s “Outstanding Wrestler” award.
