BOYS PREP SWIMMING
Olympia 126, Aberdeen 54
Welcoming Class 4A Olympia to the YMCA of Grays Harbor pool, Aberdeen opened the 2018-19 boys swimming season with a dual-meet defeat on Monday afternoon.
The Bobcats won three events on the day, but the Bears came away with a 126-54 non-league victory.
“This was a very good start to the season,” AHS head coach Rob Burns said. “This is a young team, but with a very experienced core group of swimmers leading it. Two of our three event wins came from seniors, with a freshman stepping up and taking a win as well. That will bode well for us in the future. Overall, I’m very happy with everyone’s performances.”
Senior Trevor Mullin capped Aberdeen’s day with a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke. One event earlier, freshman Russell Bates out-touched Olympia’s Dylan McDougall to win the 100 backstroke in one of the closest races of the day.
Senior Kai Kawashima gave the Bobcats their first event win of the season by winning the diving competition.
Senior Conner Gates qualified by time standards for the District IV 2A meet in February with two strong swims in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Mullin and Bates also qualified for the district meet by time standard.
On Saturday, Aberdeen will travel to Longview for the Mark Morris Pentathlon.
